No way to fix this???

Hi,

By mistake I denied access to one of my partition to the group "Users", and now I cannot find any way to restore this back to normal. My own account cannot access the partition anymore because I think it is an Admin + User, but even the hidden administrator account can't access the partition!

Is there a way to restore normal permissions on that partition? Like something with higher privileges than the Administrator?

The only thing I can think of is make a Ubuntu live cd, boot into that, move the files somewhere else, and format the partition. You can also use a USB flash drive. The link has instructions for both.

The "Take Ownership" thing does not work. You might need permissions in order to do that. The ubuntu live cd solution would probably work but that's kind of extreme. I can't believe there is no way to restore that.

Unfortunately no, That's a pretty fresh installation so no restore point created yet...

I don't see whats extreme about it. You made it where no user could touch the drive. Actually, you could try a system restore.

and go to C prompt and use a command line to change permissions. I have not tried, but it is worth a shot.

Oh, someone beat me to it. If you can't do a sytem restore, I think an ubuntu live CD or USB would be a good choice. Plus you can save it for future use. I actually have an Ubuntu installation on an external 1TB hard drive. It's kinda slow since its a 1TB drive, but I don't even have to have a working internal HDD and I can access my programs and files on any computer as long as I have the external drive.

If this is a fresh install, your best bet is to start over. Why waste time trying to fix it?

so I think the command prompt line would be for example drive f:


CACLS F: /e /p Everyone:F

this would be f drive, User is Everyone and permission is F (Full Control)

Yeah I really messed up ...
I did not know an admin user could prevent everyone from accessing a disk. Too bad there is nothing "Admin only", because for my partition Admins still have rights, but Users don't, and since a deny takes precedence over an Allow, no one can access the disk anymore.

Deleting the partition and re-creating it would fix the problem?

Try what thorsen said first, then yes it should solve the problem as far as I know. I'll do a bit of research first to make sure for you.

Petey, Ha beat you to it.... lol.... you can also put ubuntu on a Flash Drive: UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads

Edit: this makes a bootable Flash Drive so you can run Ubuntu without installing. But I think a down-side to this is that some comps don't allow booting from USB devices so it might not work in some comps. All computers can boot from CD so thats always safe. I also have Ubuntu on CD for emergency purposes (and for installs - Ubuntu is fun)

As far as I can tell you only denied access to users within Windows so you should be able to move files from it with linux.

Within Ubuntu, you can try changing the permissions as well. The command is chmod here is a good resource for that.

Edit: sorry to hear about cprompt. I was hoping that would work. You could also try from within windows and do the cmd but Run as Admin I was thinking from startup so you aren't actually in the system. but Try from in Windows too.
