NOD32 caused slow-down, AVAST hasn't

Hi tempname, your problem is that you are using a very old version of nod32.

Not according to the OP.

I thought it might be b/c my version vers of NOD32 was so old. I downloaded the latest trial version for 64-bit (v 4.0.474.x IIRC). Again, for the first hour or so everything was peachy. Then very soon I had the same behaviors.

Unless Eset specifically changed their algorithm recently, that won't change anything.

And it was released long after Vista, which is the OS I was having problems with.

Well that' strange. I had used eset for a very long time and never had such issues. Currently, I use avast 5 as my main AV and testing Norton w2011 beta.

Kaspersky is far more intrusive at looking for cracks, keygens and activation files. and MSE requiring Activation isn't intrusive at all.

According to YOU. According to me and many others, looking for Activation or Genuine Windows is NOT part of an A/V's job. It is playing cop, plain and simple.

Before going off on a tangent you might want to monitor the processes activities, it only reads the Activation and WGA data from the registry. Installing IE or WMP does exactly the same thing, the only difference is it doesn't deactivate those softwares.

I don't use IE or WMP.

MSE is free, for all legitimate owners of Microsoft Windows. You're seeing (and creating) controversy where there is no need for any.

If you see it as controversy, so be it. I don't care how you view it, and I didn't create it, MS did, by having their product be a cop along with a (poor) AV tool.

So it has two strikes against it: #1 it plays cop, #2 it does a $hitty job of finding AVs. But if YOU or others want to use it, please do! No one is stopping you... and neither can you stop me from presenting my criticisms of it, for you to agree with or not as you wish. That's what a public forum is for, my friend.

Currently I'm using NOD32 3.0.621.0 and Vista 32 bit and I have the same issues as the OP. AMD Phenom II triple core processor, 4 GB DDR3, nVidia GTX260, there's nothing in my system to blame the stops and stutters on besides software.

Do Avast or MSE do the same file scanning on load/read/write sort of deal that I think is causing my problems in nod32? If so, I guess one or both don't have the bad algorithms that nod32 has?

Like I said earlier, I used NOD32 for years... over a decade and always liked it. Unobtrusive and excellent placing in independent AV tests. I would have never switched if it wasn't for the constant hanging it caused when reaching the end of a DL'd file, first in Vista and then also in W7. Then it also started showing a progress bar when deleting a file. Like a 2MB file took several seconds to delete! DL'd newest NOD32 version, and same exact behavior.

Switched to AVAST (free edition) and NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. AVAST has also topped ESET in recent independent tests (MSE is way behind), so I didn't feel so bad switching. Have to say it is a pleasure now.

I would have stuck with NOD32 if not for the problems. I think it is an excellent AV but it has some kind of bug with certain systems, perhaps related to the AMD/nVidia combo, as you also share that factor!
