Not genuine Windows.

I know people have posted here their Windows install not being genuine, but what's bugging me is that I installed this when 7 first came out for retail. If some pillock is selling a serial number to someone else 6 months after me, why am I being penalised? If that is not that case, why is a number that was genuine for six months suddenly not genuine now?
As far as I can tell, I could give Microsoft another $300 now, and then have the number declared "not genuine" in another 6 months or so.
If the serial was genuine then, how can it not be genuine now?

Calm down. Where did you buy your copy from? Is it a retail version bought from a store? In that case it would have come in a nice packaged box. Or is it an MSDN key bought off Ebay? Or something else?

And also, don't forget to phone Microsoft. If this is a full genuine version then they will be more than happy to help.

And just so you know, you are not the only one, most users with a retail boxed version have this issue where it reports non-genuine when its not.

Granted, its from ebay...

... but how can a serial number be valid one day, and invalid a few months later?
Also, my laptop chimed in with the same complaint today.
I'm almost starting to believe in Microsoft conspiracy theories. I'm starting to wonder if they pick a random 10% of Windows 7 installs, send out an invalidation signal, and demand further payment every six months or so.
I now have a new serial for my desktop machine, which has been validated (again), but how do I know this isn't going to happen again?

MSDN/ Technet keys are not supposed to be sold. The cheap keys on Ebay are there illegally. They work initially till MS gets wind of it (maybe because there are dozens of people using the same key or because it was detected/ reported), then MS blacklists that key. That is why it may be genuine today and non-genuine tomorrow.

Bill2 is absolutely correct. This is why your key does not work. Someone on eBay sold you and MSDN or TechNET key. Then sold it many times to make money. Now that the Key has be activated many many times all around the world, Microsoft's Servers have Flag it as BLOCKED.

There is no conspiracy here this is just how Microsoft is making sure that Windows 7 is not purchase illegally. Sorry you got burned on eBay but if you bought the key for under $100 then you knew you were not buying a legit copy of Windows 7.

Um, how do I say this... Bollocks!
As they sell 99% of their serial numbers with a boxed dvd that costs probably less than a dollar to produce, for about $3-400 (here in Australia, anyway) they can still make plenty selling even a few hundred thousand at $20 each.

When you buy windows, its not that silly dvd you are paying for, its the license to use windows. MS spends a fortune designing and developing its products and they have the right to charge the cost they think appropriate, neither is MS a charitable organization. If you think MS is ripping you, switch to Linux or another free OS.

This is another one of those typical "It is Microsoft's fault; not mine." You went on line to eBay to attempt to get a cheap copy, and you did, now its is being blacklisted, so it is not your fault, but Microsoft's. Hmmm. . .what is wrong with this picture.

Man-up and go buy a boxed copy at your local computer outlet store, or get a subscription to Microsoft's Technet or MSDN (the best way to go), and this problem will go away.

Ok, fair hit, I guess. My point about multiple copies of a serial number being sold is that once a number is used to validate one PC, it should come up as invalid when someone tries to use it on another PC. As there is an online or phone check involved, I thought that was what the check was about.
As for Technet or MSDN, I will look into that further.

The reason it does NOT come up as invalid when you install is because everyone thinks Microsoft is watching their every move and they always know what someone is doing on their computer (you know conspiracy people that think Microsoft is watching your every move). Microsoft does not do this they don't care. So when you are installing an OS they (Microsoft) are NOT checking on you they assume that you are obeying the rules and NOT installing illegal software. It is only when YOU contact them (Activation) to check if the OS is valid that they (Microsoft) can and do check your Product Key. At that point if it has been installed elsewhere then both installs have a problem. You have one because your Product Key is someone else’s, and they (the other install with the same product key) have a problem because they did not secure the Product Key and let someone else use it.
