I had this same problem once and it was my A/V program. I actually had to completely uninstall it then once I could see the network I reinstalled it and I was able to see the other pc's from then on. Also I would disable the firewalls as q stated. Is your router secure or open?

I resolved this issue by uninstalling CA Security Suite 2010. I now use MSE. I am able to create & use Homegroups and all my folders remain visible & shareable.

Thanks for reporting back in becksnyc, I'm glad you heeded the advice on the A/V software being the problem, they always seems to be the cause of these types of problems but it's difficult to get that message accross sometimes.
