This is a weird one guys, please advise how I should proceed.

I recently updated to 296.10, and since then I'm getting nvlddmkm.sys error virtually each time I wake my monitor (it's set up to turn off after 10 minutes).
I basically go over the taskbar to open something, then it freezes for like 10-20 seconds, going black, and restoring with the exclamation mark without any extra info.

In the Event Viewer there is only one entry, the one typical to nvlddmkm.sys:
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered

I noticed some services quitting and starting around the error, here is an overview:
System Log:
26.03.2012 08:11:01 The Software Protection service entered the stopped state.
26.03.2012 08:14:11 The Application Experience service entered the stopped state.
26.03.2012 08:22:02 The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service entered the stopped state.
26.03.2012 08:43:55 The Diagnostic System Host service entered the stopped state.
26.03.2012 08:44:56 Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
26.03.2012 08:44:56 The Diagnostic System Host service entered the running state.
26.03.2012 08:45:06 The Application Experience service entered the running state.

At the same time, in Application:
26.03.2012 08:11:01 The Software Protection service has stopped.
26.03.2012 08:44:55 A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (4)
26.03.2012 08:44:55 The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application

I left my computer short after 8am, came back at 8:45, when the error occured.

I tried not going to the taskbar, but instead doubleclicked the Word file on the desktop. Same thing happened.

The most weird thing is that it's yet to happen while gaming, so it's not overload.
My system is watercooled 2600K and GTX580 with 8GB RAM, Corsair PSU... a quite powerful hardware all in all.

What I tried:
Rolling back the usual way.
Deleting all nvlddmkm.sys in safe mode and installing the driver.
Cleaning with Driver Sweeper in safe mode.
Installing in safe mode.
Used SlimDrivers to update everything.
Windows updates have always been installed.

Till recently I had no problems with 295.73, only all of the sudden after update to 296.10 did problems begin.

Also going to older drivers didn't help.

Any advices, where to start looking, how to find this would be very very much appreciated!

Uhmm, sorry for being a bit of noob. I just read the instructions what I have to put additionally.

System:
Intel 2600K
Asus P8P67 Pro
Zotac GTX580 1.5GB
8GB Corsair RAM
SB Soundcard, Xtreme Music I think
M-Audio Audiophile 2496, sound card
4 HDDs (2x Seagate, 2x WD Raptor)
Windows Ultimate 64bit full retail
OS installation is some 2 years old (it changed more than one hardware set), but has been working beautifully until this driver, the 296.10 came.

Minidump + Perfmon.

I'd like to update a minor fact:

It doesn't have anything to do with a monitor off state. It's simply idle time on the computer, nothing going on. I turned off any power management (maximum performance, turn off monitor disabled).
I just timed 17minutes, it froze after I wanted to open anything. Then unfroze after some 10seconds.

Thans, but in the meantime, I managed to find what was causing it. It was this time, unfortunately, my error. Running without AV, as clever as I was apparently, gave me some very clever Adspy, which I didn't notice, since I didn't run actively, but there was entry in the registry, so I found the bugger.
Cleaning proved to be more difficult, but managed.
Now everything is back to normal.

Yes, these problems can be caused by viruses/malware. That is why I recommended checking for those. Glad you beat me to the punch and solved the problem. Nice troubleshooting! :)
