So, I've played The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for years on end ever since release, and it's still my favorite game. Too bad I can't play it anymore. For some reason, it crashes somewhere between the Bethesda logo sequence and the main menu. I never get to the main menu (problem there maybe? idk). I've tried reinstalling, checking for remnants of mods, deleting the .ini file, playing with the \data directory, basically everything covered in other threads. HELP ME PLZ it's my favorite game
System (keep in mind, I have been playing it for years, and it suddenly won't work anymore)

Also, I think that Oblivion started working AFTER I moved my computer from my room upstairs to my basement... Maybe it has something to do with me connecting my monitor differently...

I love how I'm talking to myself. Hm. Welll, I finally got it to work by disabling Desktop Composition... I don't know why it stopped working now, but, hey.

Welcome to SF!

I, too, have been playing Oblivion for a long time.
I am playing it without problems on Windows 7 and I don't have to turn off the DC.
There is a great TweakGuides article that may help you with some settings: TweakGuides.com - Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Tweak Guide

There's a lot of useful stuff on this site and not just for Oblivion.

Hope this helps!

Remenants of mods?

Mine would crash on start up, right at the loading screen, after removing certain mods.

have you deleted the .ini flie loacated here?
Documents / My Games / Oblivion
Delete the Oblivion.ini & the Render info file.

Restart Oblivion, and you will need to reset all your graphics settings.
Then try and see if it will start.

If you start up with no problems, then start adding your mods.
(Use OBMM too :) )

It might also be worth checking the load order, and in your DATA folder deleting any the Folders:
Textures / Meshes if they exist.
A re-install may be in order too.

i am also having problems with installing oblivion on my laptop. i've checked the specs and everything but the operating system is all good for me. ive tried running it in compatability mode for XP(service pack 2) or something like that and also on the virtual computer XP thing but of course the specs for that system wont let even morrowind run.
i would also like to know if the shivering isles patch is anything that fixes or updates the game to run on windows 7 or if it is just something to install once i actually get the game running?
My dad did say something about a default installation on windows 7 that separates the program and the program data which might be the problem but im not sure, any help would be great because im really excited to play!

we installed a windows live thing and my dad tweaked a few things and i got this error:

Faulting application name: Oblivion.exe, version: 1.1.0.425, time stamp: 0x444e8718

very easy fix

the reason it crashes is because you dont have the right resolution when you load game, to fix when the first menu come up, go to options and adjust the resolution to fit you monitor. so easy lol

My Computer

OS
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
go options menu, adjust resolution to you screen, and its fixed.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
for some reason the game sets resolution to 680-480 somthing like that, so when the first menu loads, go options and change the resolution to fit you screen
