Old games have lag spikes

The lag spikes are not that bad, they only occur once in a while, the only game really giving me grief is age of empires 2... that`s giving everyone grief, seeing u need to disable explore.exe if u don`t want purple water, but I get quite nasty lag spikes on that game... luckly I never played it very much because I only got it 2 years ago... those kind of games u have to play from first time they release it do be loyal to it, because they`re more advanced games now like the total war series... still unfortunate, a 1300 dollar laptop getting lag spikes like an intel pentium 1 would... shame.
Is there anything else u did besides changing performance settings? I doubt they would matter on older games. Do u remember anything else u did?

It was a false positive unfortunately. They came back just a tiny bit weaker than before. I really don't know what this is anymore. Looks like we're both still screwed. I just played a bunch of age of mythology with friends and that 2-3 pause was driving us crazy...

Sorry for the bad news :(

You know what? The more u play the game, the less lag spikes u get. For example, with counter strike, I used to have so many lag spikes, but after a while of playing it, it happens only occasionally. I haven't played age of empires allot, maybe that's why it lags when I do play it.
I have tried many things to fix it. I have fidelled with affinity. I have turned of all processors but one, put a cap on my RAM, fidelled with virtual memory, switched between my two graphics card, changed performance and power setting, updated as many drivers as I could (including video and sound ones, of course) and still nothing. Guess it's something we're going to have to live with. Only thing I can do know is activate my warranty with acer and ask them questions how to resolve it. My brother will be in town soon with his new laptop, so I can see if he gets lag spikes on certain games. I really don't know what the problem is, it just seems some people have these lag spikes and some don't, no way to fix them, just like some healthy people have migranes while others don't.
Seeing u play age of mythology, and me age of empires, which are basically the same games made by microsoft except age of mythology is a spin of of age of empires, we probably have the same common things that's f***ing up our games.

It's true its very likely the same thing. I feel your pain too, I tried everything right down to core affinity and it didn't make the slightest difference... I have a copy of XP kicking around so I'm gonna try to set up a dual boot and see if the xp version lags me. If not, its the worthless integrated graphics most likely... And its not just the age of __ series its pretty much anything before ~2003. Even things like pharaoh lag. I'm pretty sure I could run that game on my toaster.

Ur laptop has only one graphics card, right?
Intel HD graphics card definitly isn't the best, but I'd say its good to run games on high settings up till 2005... maybe even newer games on the lowest settings. But it definitly can't be the problem for Age of Mythology, it uses only a slighlty more upgraded game engine than age of empires 2, and both games only need really low specs, even an Intel Graphics card should run it on the highest settings.

Yeah I can run age of empires III on like max graphs and any source based games and starcraft two. Its just the old games that it does these annoying lag spikes for. That's why i came here. I figured hardware couldnt do that so it had to be windows 7. Ill try xp and we'll see how it goes.

Does age of empires 3 lag for u?
The source engine is a newer game engine, so it shouldn't be a real problem for u. Counter strike source runs great for me, I only get lag on that rarely, and it's probably a ping thing rather than my computer. Keep me posted on how windows XP runs. I actually wanted to buy it, but the store's don't sell it anymore, and my old computer came with XP already installed. Maybe I can see if I can download a legit copy of XP, since I have the key after all.

I haven't installed xp yet (I need to buy another hard disk because it turns out windows 7 is on a hidden partition of my drive not a disk so a reinstall would remove this), but I have another possible solution. I uninstalled Toshiba Value added package, and uninstalled my display drivers and installed them straight from the intel site. It seems not to be lagging again, but as before it's very temperamental and this might just be a temporary fix. If you want to do it, just be sure you know what you're doing when you remove the display drivers. Good luck

Keep me posted how it works out. That's a messy thing ur doing and if it doesn't work than it's not worth the trouble to potentially screw up ur system.

Still no lag, I also installed sp1 at the same time so it could have been that as well. Can't remember if you had a Toshiba but if you're going to remove the toshiba value added package, you'll probably want to reinstall it but only with utilities checked off so that you can use the toshiba flash cards. Just to recap:

1) Reinstalled Intel HD Display Drivers
2) Install all necessary Windows updates, including service pack 1
3) Remove Toshiba Value added package or any bloatware associated with your manufacturer.

I think my w7 runs better since I installed the sp1. It is still a lil glitchy at some things video codecs or reading dics or installing patches what ever- but it games like a champ and the few older games I have installed.

Just got just cause2 and mafia2 the other day, not playing mafia2 yet tho- love jc2. Gees it is beautiful and runs great even on my old 8800 gts ko g92 vid card. I am not really into 3rd view games but jc2 is pretty cool. If I keep my vid card fan cranked up to 84 85% while gaming I have no probs.

Need to vac my intake fans filters and vid card exhaust- maybe I will do it later today- it is 330 am now. Guess I am happy with my new system and w7- as long as I can game and make my videos I am ok I guess. When I get a better vid card I am going to try and over clock this thing to like 4.2 on the cpu- maybe will game even better. Hope so any way.

Hope you guys got or get your systems figured out and have some fun gaming.

See ya..

I have an Acer laptop, but I could fiddle around with the Intel HD, even if I screw it up, it's no biggy, seeing I have an ati graphics card installed.
I'm pretty sure I have windows updated as I update often and check for updates.
Thanks for tips though.
