Solved One display on two monitors

How do you get a multi-monitor setup to show windows on both screens ? I'm using a setup with dual monitors, yet only one monitor shows the desktop, the other is blank. Only thing I see is the cursor and the BG color on the second monitor ?

What you are describing is normal. The desktop is on one monitor and you can open/drag most any app window into the 2nd monitor area.

If you right click the mouse when at the desk top you should see a menu item called "screen resolution". Click on this & it should take you the "change appearance of display" screen. One of the items listed is "multiple displays". Here you can have the desk top on either one of the monitors, or both, or you can extend the display.
You can also access this from Control Panel under "display".

I've switched displays in control panel, but I can't move windows between display, as mentioned by UserNameIssue. It seems like my only option is a another program that can do what I'm after, because windows is crippled in this area

It sounds like you may not have the second monitor setup properly.

Let's start with the basics. What are the brands and model numbers of the monitors, and how do you have them connected at both ends (monitors/graphics card)?

Be sure to check that the monitor's on screen menu settings is set to use the correct input connection (ex: HDMI, DVI, etc...) used on the monitor from the graphics card.

Please post a screenshot showing your Screen Resolution window to see what you currently have set for them.

But it is not as you described nor what I'm used to seeing. I did not notice that you are using W8 when I posted before.

Notice that the task bar is not on the second monitor. Hence my statement that what you described was normal... which does not seem to be the case for W8.

I have it working, I had it working :20 minutes after starting the thread I'm setting this up in Windows7. Is there anything Windows doesn't have out of the box that may be helpful with a dual monitor setup, by means of a 3rd party software add-on etc ?

I've never needed anything else than what was included in Windows for multiple monitors, but it just depends on what you want as well.

Windows can only, clone the desktop between monitors. I want to only clone the task bar, unfortunately windows can't do this. I found a third party program that can, although it's not free

If you like, Windows 8 has the taskbar on all displays. However, only the main display has the notification area and clock on it's taskbar.

I was just pointing out that Windows 8 has that option built-in if you were going to upgrade in the future. I didn't know if this was for Windows 7 or 8 from your specs.
