Operations Are In Progress, Please Wait

Twice recently, when selecting a restart of the OS, instead of proceeding normally, I get a shutdown screen with the message in the title, plus it says that "The machine will shutdown automatically when it is finished". I understand most shutdown messages, but not this one, because when it occurs, there has been no updates to process, and no scheduled tasks are running. Why does this screen appear?

EDIT: Maybe I don't wait long enough, but it seems that it will never finish the operations that it is talking about, and the cursor just keeps spinning round and around.

Are you using Acronis True Image? If so, have a look at:

Yes, I do have TI, therefore it appears that it is the cause of the problem. I didn't think so, because this last occurrence wasx ~ 1 hour prior to the scheduled time for a differential image to be made, but apparently it is still the culprit. When I checked the last image in the file manager, it does have one that is date/time stamped properly for this morning, but when I look in TI itself, it doesn't list each diff image, only the primary one, in version 12, it only shows the time of the last image, without any indication that there might have been a problem. If the restart was to delay until completion of the image, that would have meant that it would have waited 1 hour plus actual backup time, which is far beyond my patience.

I read where that this behavior can be curbed, so as to not interrupted restarts, but that still runs the same risk of data corruption, so it isn't truly a solution. Not sure how to handle it, but you have certainly put me on the right trail, thanks.

I've only scanned through it, so I may have missed something, but it appears that this is a known bug in both TI 2011 & 2012. It is worse in 2012, because I don't find any means to stop this in settings, as shown in the article that you linked. That appears to only apply to previous versions. At the moment, I'm seriously considering going back to version 2010, because I never saw this happen with it. I guess I wasted my money updating.

I am on 2010 myself, and feel no need to upgrade as I create my images manually anyway. A Guy

The reason that I upgraded was for the universal restore ability of 2012, creating automatic images had nothing to do with it, because 2010 also has the ability to automatically image via incremental or differential functions, and the best that I remember, it has the ability to schedule full images as well.

I'm wondering if I can have both 2010 and 2012 installed at the same time, so as to retain the ability of making universal backup images, and 2010 for everything else?

I'm on 2010 as well. It's been rock solid for me and does what I need it to do. When 2011 came out, I considered upgrading but it seemed their forums were full of people with issues...so I figured...why spend my money.

The solution for me was to do a system restore to a point before the issue became known. For example, I noticed this happening in the past week or so where the computer would not shut down and the message stayed and the only way to get out was to turn off the computer.
The solution for me - and this has been twice in the past couple of years - was simply to do a system restore to a week or so before the problem started.
