Optimizing RAM in Win7

I have an ME machine rotting in the loft (at least it would be if computers could rot ). Yeah, I enjoyed Vista but my PC at the time was far too slow (as it only had 1GB RAM) for it to be much fun. Whenever I see someone using XP, I also thing "*sigh* move on, it's ten years old!!!" and then when Linux buddies complain about XP lacking features, I have to persuade them that it wasn't even MS's last shot, it was their last last shot a decade ago!

you must be one of the few people that actually got to experience how nice Vista actually was!

Not true, Vista is a great system and I love it. But one has to move on.

I recently got to run my Vista computer for a month while the Win 7 x64 rig was getting an SSD because its HDD crashed after only 8 months of use. I had forgotten what a treat it was to run a computer hard all day and only use 600-700 MB of RAM. Yes one has to move on, but compared to Win 7 the Vista computer is full of potential and possibilities unlike Win 7 which is fully baked by comparison and all of those open options for user improvement that Vista has always had are now sealed.

That's exactly how Vista got its poor reputation because it was installed on so many computers with legacy builds that were designed to run a kernel less than 1/2 the size. And Vista's legacy in the Win 7 OS is much better received in this day of better built computers which leaves me without any complaints...

Ah, yeah I suppose so. I recently reinstalled Vista onto my old 80GB HDD after rebuilding my PC to be better. With 2GB of RAM it works a breeze, most times faster than Windows 7. Unfortunately I have to manually switch the cables for the HDDs, but I'm willing to sacrifice five minutes for hours of awesomeness

But why do you need to manually switch the cables. Can you not switch HDDs via the BIOS?

Not from what I've found in it, no :/
Unfortunately it's still an old style bios with a few modern features. I've seen some older Dells with more functional BIOSes

(I only tried connecting it with the second IDE port halfway along the cable. Unfortunately, it didn't work :/ )
