Hi all, i am new here.

I am connected to the internet via the wireless network so it is definitely connected but I see an orange asterisk on the wireless icon in windows 7 instead of the usual signal strength.

I thought this icon meant that you weren't connected but there were wireless networks available.

I do have a VPN setup to my work network on the computer as well but it shows this icon irrespective of whether I am connected to the VPN or not.

It is a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop.

I swear i have seen the signal strength version in the past so lord knows what has happened to make it show this annoying orange asterisk.

fix

Go to control panel-programs and features-find the dell wireless mgr-highlight it
and right click and choose remove program-once it confirms removal re-boot
your computer-windows will find new hardware and re-install the wireless card
then windows will manage your wireless connections
Note: you will have to reconnect to your wireless router the first time then check the box to auto connect each time
