No previous problems with Outlook and XP. New clean Win 7 installation and now random failures to send emails.
Tried repairs to Office/ Outlook; Uninstalling Norton; fresh set up for each of my email accounts but nothing cures it. Same addresses are rejected with message from System Administrator that "has not been delivered to following Recipients:" - but no details. Failed emails show up in "Sent" folder but account of sender has been changed from david to sue or sue to rod. Test messages between these go through ok. Is this a win 7 problem because I have tried everything associated with other programmes that I or my friends can think of?

Outlook 2007 is running fine for me, so not sure what the problem is, other than you might have entered a wrong character or something setting up your mail.

Same here. Windows 7 and Outlook 2007 are working fine. Haven't heard about any issues like your.
I doubt if the issue is with Win7 as it has nothing to do with email sending or receiving.
If you have a backup copy of your Outlook pst file I would consider using it.Also you may have a virus running around sending emails out with ficticious address.
I have heard about viruses doing that awhile back but nothing recent.
Run Malewarebytes and your virus scanner for sure.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks FZ21Z but it is not as simple as that. I have tried retyping dozens of times and deleting and re-entering account details likewise. How do you explain change of sender?
IggyAZ- Clean install of Win 7 which necessitates new install of Office and therefore .pst files. Numerous Office repairs and un-install/ new install twice. New Norton Internet Security fully updated and even had Norton Support take over my machine and found nothing associated with virus or actions of Norton.
macpike - I love Win 7 and wondered about replacement of ActiveSync but Mobile Device Centre works superbly well with my Ipaq
BTW my problem is not the ISP because I can send to same people with my laptop on Outlook and Win XP.

Perhaps some add-in is causing a problem? You could try running Outlook in safe mode: go to the Run box at the bottom of the Orb menu and type

outlook.exe /safe

and see if that fixes it, then please report back :)

Everything still syncs for me but the calendar which is silent.
Someone has suggested that my PDA is more sensitive to the data than Outlook and therefore I should try to remove all data from calendar to a different file and try to sync one entry to see if I can connect. If that works, then I could ASSume that something in the Outlook exisitng calendar data was corrupting the sync. Does this make any sense? I ask because I have no clue how to transfer all the calendar data out of OUtlook to another file.
Appreciate your interest and assistance.
My safe mode suggestion was to greenwellington, whose thread you have kind of hijacked ;)

How about starting a new thread about the calendar issue, which will probably attract more expert interest as well keeping things nice and tidy? Meanwhile I will have a think about the sync :)

Thanks Clunkfish - that was an option I hadn't thought of.
Before I try that, will I come out of safe mode next time I start Outllook?

Yes - if you start Outlook from the Start menu or a shortcut or whatever you usually use, it will start normally.

If the /safe switch cures things, we can start to look for a culprit add-in; if it doesn't, we can think about other alternatives.

Have you got the syntax right? If you type in the "Search programs and files" field that is at the bottom of the window that opens when you click the start orb:

outlook.exe /safe

with a space between outlook.exe and /safe, it should work....

OK - got safe mode pressing Control key when starting Outlook and did same email that failed earlier today.
It still failed with this message fro "System Administrator":
"Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Subject: Synod
Sent 25/01/2010 18:27
The following recipients cannot be reached:" (No name given but only to one person). It also changed my account from david to rod.
Where do we go from there?

Hi Clunkfish,
No, that is not what I receive - at least not with this problem.
The message is from "System Administrator" ( I guess on my machine) and is exactly as I gave it in the last posting.
It happens for various addresses including some on my own ISP (as this one) but I can't get it to happen on emails between my 3 Accounts or from Outlook test email. Possibly 70% go through ok on other addresses and I can send to everyone on laptop with Outlook 2007 and Win XP.
Sods law decrees that the problem kicks in on some of my most important contacts. N.B. It never happened before installing Win 7

I'm afraid we have reached the limits of my competence (doesn't require a very long journey). If your SMTP server settings are definitely correct (including security settings and port assignments), then I am baffled.

Sorry old bean :(

Thanks for trying Clunkfish- at least you gave me the option of trying Safe Mode.
I am satisfied that SMTP settings etc. are correct because they are same as on my laptop and 2 out of 3 are set by nifty programme from ISP.
I just hope it starts happening to someone else after installing Win 7 so that Microsoft can get involved:eek:

So you've not actually set them yourself?

Hi FZ21Z,
I usually set them myself with settings used previously without problems. Because of continuing difficulties, I thought I would use the ISP to set my wife's and mine to see if it made any difference.
With the one which is independent of this ISP, I used the same settings as pre Win 7. They still failed on the same addresses and it is people who I communicated regularly with before the installation of Win 7 and re-installation of Office/ repair/re-installation etc. etc.
All the settings work OK on the laptop.
There are two questions which, to me, defy logic but if we can get past them it would point to the source of the problem:
1 - Where does the above mentioned failure message from "System Administrator" emanate from?
2 - What on earth (or to narrow it down, in my machine!) could change the account I chose to send from, to one of my other accounts?
Don't doubt me on this last one - I have dozens of failures parked in "Failed emails" all having done just this. Note that when we experience a failure, it doesn't matter what Account we use it always fails and always changes the account.
Other than the above, I just love Win 7!

Shall we take a leap into the unknown? :D

From How to turn on the Enable Mail Logging option for troubleshooting in Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007:

To enable the mail logging option, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Other tab, click Advanced Options.
  3. Click to select the Enable logging (troubleshooting) check box in Outlook 2007, and then click OK two times.
  4. The following is the default location of the log files: <username>\Local Settings\Temp
Point 4 applies to XP: I'm not at a Win 7 machine at the moment so can't check, but I guess the log file gets put in the analogous location.

If you do that and try sending one of the troublesome emails, then post the contents of the log file, maybe it will become clear...

Don't forget to turn logging off again!

Hi Clunkfish,
Thanks for sticking with it.
Sorry but can only get so far.
Switched Enable Logging on - no problem and sent failed email.
Looked for any info where Log may be stored and could only find "Event Log".
Looked through lots of entries in the three sections:
Summary of Administrative Events
Recently Viewed Nodes
Log Summary.
However can't find any way of searching for the entry related to this failure - i.e like needle in haystack.
The only thing I can use to pinpoint this event is the time of sending but so far can find nothing specifically at the time of the failed mail.
Will try again but can you give any advice about thinning down the search e.g. which of above sections or am I totally in the wrong place?

It's well hidden! I'm at my Win 7 PC now so have been able to locate it. You'll need to be able to see hidden stuff:

  1. Open any folder
  2. Click Organize > Folder and search options > View tab
  3. Then click the radio button next to "Show hidden files, folders and drives"
Then navigate to the log file:

  1. Hard drive > Users > (your user name) > AppData > Local > Temp > Outlook Logging
  2. Open up OPMLog and any other text files in Notepad and copy the contents
  3. Paste here
  4. We all panic ;)
Hopefully something in there will give the game away :geek:
