I own a DELL XPS L401X Laptop......It's got 500 gb hard disk...4 partitions
C:229 gb(Primary) , D:223GB(Logical) , Recovery:12gb , OEM Partition:30 mb..
Now i want to remove 100 gb out of c drive and make a new partition...but whenever i try to do so the shrunk space becomes unallocated and i have to add it back to c drive...A friend of mine suggested me to use "Parted magic" but i am sceptic.......please help.....

Things get dicey when you go above 4 partitions. I personally don't ever go above two.

That being said, if you are adding a partition to dual-boot, look into virtualization.

If you need the partition for some other reason, you should be able to make recovery discs, and do away with the Recovery partition.

Did you have the VirtualBox Additions installed? I've used Ubuntu in a VM without any issues.

You can have another Logical partition by shrinking C using Disk Mgmt, then creating a new Logical partition in the space using free Partition Wizard.

This is because it is adjacent to D so can join it's Logical extended container since it's contiguous.

If Disk Mgmt doesn't shrink C enough then use PW boot CD to remain failsafe.

@gregrocker - Dude i know the drill....i already tried Disk mgmt many times....as soon as i shrink the space,it goes unallocated....I will try PW boot CD......

That's why I said to use PW to create the Logical - it treats Unallocated (Primary) space and Free (Logical) space the same for creating either Primary or Logical partitions.

I could have suggested doing it all with PW but you'd need to use the boot disk to shrink totally safely as Disk Mgmt does.

If you know it all why are you asking here?

@gregrocker - Don't be mad...i was saying so coz first u insisted on using Disk mgmt, which i already tried a couple of times....as for PW boot CD...i will definitely give it a try....thanks and sorry if what i said offended u.....

Did you consider running Fedora on a live CD. You can run it off a CD/DVD without making any changes to your existing HDD. If it is only to practice Linux, this is one of the best option.

Fedora 16 Desktop Edition - Installable Live Media

If you have an external USB HDD or a larger flash drive, may be you can install Fedora (from the above live CD) on the USB device and boot off it. This will leave your laptop's HDD undisturbed.
