Solved Partition Merging Guidance

Hello,

I installed Win7 x64 (Fresh Install ) on my old HDD. Which had 3 partitions (C D and E) with data on D & E. Windows got installed on C: (100GB) and the data on D and E was accessible later.
Now what i need is instead of 2 partitions (D:50GB and E 100 GB) , i wish to have one SINGLE partition with 150GB..

So what i need to do..? In disc management just select merge option ? or do i need to delete both partitions first so that 150 GB will be shown as unallocated space.. and then create a SINGLE partition with full available size ....
Now that new partition will be called Primary or Logical by default ?

Don`t delete anything if you have data on it until you back it up.

Once you get the data off you can delete the partitions and then create 1 partition.

Personally, I would make the partition primary.

The data will be backed up and then the procedure will be followed. (that means the procedure of deleting and then making one big is correct )

btw,what diff will it make to data if it is a primary partition or logical drive ? (OS will be always on C: which is primary and active)

If you`re just storing data you can make it whatever you want.

Some reading.

Primary partitions are partitions that you can boot windows from, while you can't do that from a logical. Logical partitions were implemented to overcome this limitation of 4 partitions per disk, but windows is stupid enough not to be able to boot from a logical partition. However, you can always install (and boot) linux on a logical partition.

Depending on how many windows installations you want, create primary partitions for those, and create as many logicals you want. Beware, the extended partition itself (the one which holds the logical partitions) counts as a partition, so you can have 3 primary and 1 logical extended partitions at most (and a number of logical drives inside the extended). You can have only 4 primary partitions (3 if you decide to have an extended partition), whereas you can have an arbitrary number of logical partitions. There are no OS-specific advantages other than older versions of Windows must be installed on a primary partition and that the legacy MBR bootloader can only boot from a primary partition. You do not need to delete or do anything to your Windows partition if no apps are installed in the other two partitions.
Just back up your data partitions, delete them, and then expand the windows partition. Then copy back your data to the new partition.
All this you can do from disk management if the partitions you are deleting are to the right of your C: partition. and they are contiguous.
If they are to the left of C:, or on both sides, you need to use Partition Wizard bootable CD.

There is no reason to delete both partitions to merge them. You can move the data off then delete the second one to extend the first one, or use Partition Wizard Extend function to annex as much space from any other partition as needed for any partition. Please post back a screenshot of your maximized Disk Management drive map and listings:

1. Type Disk Management in Start rb: Search box.
2. Open Disk Mgmt. window and maximize it.
3. Type Snipping Tool in Start Search box.
4. Open Snipping Tool, choose Rectangular Snip, click New, draw a box around full drive map and all listings.
5, Save Snip, attach using paper clip in Reply Box.
