Patch KB 3161608 crashes Word 2003

After updating my Win7 Ultimate with KB 3161608, Word 2003 will crash when you try to start it.
If I uninstall this update patch, Word returns to normal functions again.
Any ideas what to do to get this update to play nice with Word?

Currently I'm unable to download that update. A few problems have been reported with it. It's just a guess but maybe it's being reworked before a new version gets released. Like I say - just guessing.

Note: I had already installed it on a couple of machines with no problems personally.

If so few have had problems with this patch, I wonder if MS will fix it and re-release it for those who have had this issue.

Do you use EMET ?
If you do, disable Office in EMET and see if that helps.
I see one of the fixes in this rollup update is to fix an issue with Office 2010 and EMET.

fwiw, I have this update installed and have Office 2010 and EMET, no problems here.

I just booted Win 7 and Windows Update has KB3172605 available for me.
I'm going to create a backup image, install it, and see how it goes.

I installed it via Windows Update and so far no problems here with Office 2010 Excel and Word.

Just checked my Update and KB3172605 isn't in there, however a new one has been added (KB 3035583).
Are you saying that KB3172605 replaces kb3161608, because I no longer see patch kb3161608 in my update list.
Interesting.

Check the other posts in that thread though as I reckon that you might need kb3020369 installed before going ahead.

Forget that KB3035583 unless you want the Get Windows 10 app on your PC.

Do you mean office 2013? If you are using 2003 I strongly suggest that you upgrade to at least 2007 which is still at the moment supported. Office 2003 is not and it is so old that technically there is no support for running it on Windows 7 so you can't expect stable performance. That said you can try compatibility mode. Browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11. Find the program (I don't have 2003 installed but I think that it is called winword.exe) and see this guide for enabling compatibility mode. Thanks for the advise but I don't see KB3172605 or kb3020369 in my Windows Update screen. Don't know if it will eventually show up. I'll just keep and eye out for it.

Thanks for your input. I realize that Word 2003 is old but it functions for me just fine so I have little incentive to upgrade. The only problem I have ever had with Word 2003 was after recently installing kb3161608 which Susan Bradley of Windows Secrets said to install. Once I uninstalled this patch, Word was fine again.

The others are still not though
When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.

There are several problems with using a version that old. For one Microsoft is not performing any patches so it is no longer secure. Two they likely aren't considering it's compatibility with other patches which resulted in instability from that hotfix. It isn't even technically supported on 7 so there is the possibility of problems when using it on 7.

I doubt Word is the security risk it is more likely 2003 outlook that has all of the security holes.
