My PC is freezing randomly. There appears to be no pattern to this. The cursor freezes and the screen does not alter - no BSOD. No response from keyboard or mouse and requires a hard reboot.

I thought it may be when it was trying to go into sleep mode, so I disabled this and only allowed to hibernate. However, it is still crashing. I have checked memory by switching memory to different sockets and also going to single channel (2 2GB sticks). I have replaced ageing video card. I have been forced through chkdsk and not found errors on disks.

I have attached zipped BSOD details...although I found no perfmon file to ZIP

Please start with these free, bootable diagnostics (to rule out some of the more common hardware issues): Initial Hardware Diagnostics

Download a fresh copy of the latest version of your antivirus
Uninstall the current version from your system
Install the freshly downloaded copy, update it, and perform a full system scan

Please follow the instructions here to remove and install DRIVERS ONLY for your ATI video card: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure

If the above steps don't stop the BSOD's, please zip up and upload any new memory dumps with your next post - and we'll see what we can figure out from there.

The following info is just FYI, I've already addressed the issues that I saw in the above paragraphs

- Further info on BSOD error messages available at: http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html
- Info on how to troubleshoot BSOD's (DRAFT): http://www.carrona.org/userbsod.html

Sorry for the delay in responding, I've been on holiday.

I've tried to do the very first memory check (memtest86+), but the machine halts before it gets to the end of the test. I've tried it a few times, and it doesn't fail at exactly the same point each time but a similar place. It gets through around 26 to 28% of the way through - about 7 mins elapsed time.

Do I do other hardware tests or is this showing that there is a memory issue?

Thanks

I've tried running the Prime95 test and it failed after a couple of minutes only getting to the 2nd or 3rd test before the PC locked up. I also tried testing alternatively with just a single stick installed. One stick managed to get to the 5th test, but then the PC locked up. The other stick failed to boot. Now I cannot up boot up with either stick in either slot, so assume that the memory is now competely kaput?
