Hey Guys,

I want to tweak my PC because I don't think its running at its full potential. I'm after some tweaking help links or threads and maybe some software links and speedtest links or software. Can anyone provide me with any info atall on how to generate more speed from a PC...?

Hope I'm not asking to much on my first post.

Nice to be here by the way. Some great info on this forums, think I'll stick around and see what I can learn. ;)

Hi and welcome. Sounds like you want to overclock. Lots of reading to learn and to be able to weigh the advantages against the concerns is required. Google will have plenty of info for you specific to your motherboard, cpu and ram if you would like to learn.

I know pretty much the basics and a bit more but indepth is way out of my league. I do need to learn more about the workings and configuration of PC's.

I will use google but just didn't know if there where recommended links or posts in the forums that would put me right. ;)

Thanks for your reply. :)

No one ever asked. in what way do you think your computer needs to be tweaked? for games, for internet, for opening apps? why do you think it needs to be tweaked?

Just curious

Because I build websites for a living using XHTML 1.0 Strict DOCTYPES and CSS 2.1 and want something that is quick at opening and running apps and gives me good speeds on creating websites as regards to using whats required for building and maintaining websites and I also run my servers from my desktop for my UK based hosting company and do most things remotely.

I have some knowledge of PC's and how to configure them but my main area is development and server management. Hope this helps. Maybe it has nothing to do with PC Tweaking atall. Just wondered thats all.

Well, being a programmer myself, i find that the easiest way to develop/build new pages/scripts are with having a powerful laptop/desktop. Maybe just upgrade ram/processor. But you can also over clock - as stated above. My laptop is perfectly good at opening web-development app's and running rigorous scripts.

Check out RightMark CPU Clock Utility. I find it's the easiest way to overclock out there...
http://cpu.rightmark.org/

Just Google how to overclock using that software, its really easy to use and all. :D

Those so called PC speed tweaks don't do much. If you want more speed from your system than overclocking is only true speed tweak that I know of. The draw back is that you need really good hardware, third party cooling and lots of experiance to do it right. For flat out speed, CPU-FSB overclocking is king.

With your CPU at 2.6 GHz the speed of your system will be limited.

If you wonder what fast looks like take a look at my specs.

Hey thanks DarkDavil for this useful information and link. I will check it out. I have however just "Clean Installed" my PC because I was having issues where even when I was working my PC would go into Hibernation and would not allow me to come out of it again. I tried everything on the net that was suggested and still after 20 minutes my PC would shut down no matter what I was in the middle of doing.

It's sorted now but now I have to re-install all my back-ups and apps/software which is a pain because theres quite a few things like Adobe Master Collection which seems to take ages to install even with 8 gig of RAM.

Anyway thank you for your help. ;)

Nice spec you have there. I say my PC is self built but my motherboard is from a premade tower so really I need to upgrade it and soon I am also upgrading my 500 Watt PSU to the 1000 Watt PSU but before hand the motherboard needs changing first and Processors.

Thanks for your help buddy, appreciated. :)

Just to let you Guys know that the problem with the PC shutting down after 20 minutes was because my Graphics card was busted so I purchased a new one and alls fine.

I have also tweaked it using the stop windows indexing and the like thats recommended on 7 forums.

Over clocking I'm not sure if I am good enough to do it because I would be worried that I will mess my PC up and this little baby pays my morgage and what not :)

I have also tweaked it using the stop windows indexing and the like thats recommended on 7 forums.
The best suggestion that I can make regarding tweaking is to pull out a stop watch and time a few of the key types of things that you do on a regular basis. Then start tweaking things one at a time and run the timing tests. If things don't improve noticeably it might not even be worth it. I've also found tweaking that after shutting off a number of services and other things that instead of getting faster, my machine actually got slower.

I'm usually pretty skeptical of most performance tweaks. My best and fastest windows boot times and such often happen right after installing the OS. Once I start loading crap and making changes...my speeds often drop. Some people swear by their tweaks, but I let the stopwatch be the final judge.

Over clocking I'm not sure if I am good enough to do it because I would be worried that I will mess my PC up and this little baby pays my morgage and what not :)
Overclocking is not for the faint of heart and often only significantly improves benchmark scores...but doesn't necessarily translate to real world performance increases. For example, I've bumped my Q9550 from 2.83Ghz to 3.20Ghz and while my benchmarks went up...the actual functional changes running real apps is slim to nill. Not to mention, you usually have to put time and effort into keeping an overclock cool as well....and not every piece of hardware overclocks exactly the same as the next piece...even if they are the same make/model.

Some great info on this forums, think I'll stick around and see what I can learn. ;)

Win7 is not as "tweakable" as XP and 2000 were. It's not like you're going to change some registry setting and actually see it run faster... in fact, you're very likely to see it run slower or not at all. I've worked with Win2000 and XP machines since they began and have been using Win7 for just over a month... There are lots of behavioral things you can do, fixing networking issues, improving sound, reducing disk thrashing, but far as I can tell none of that makes a whit of difference to the average speed of the OS.

Moreover; if I dare suggest, as a software developer you don't want to work on a highly tweaked computer... the risk is simple... you might end up creating the be all and end all setup that only runs on your one machine. Programmers and web developers machines should be as close to "out of the box" (the way Joe Average runs them) as possible.
