Hi Folks, Am a newbie on here :).
I upgraded my vista pc to Win 7 on Friday all was fine no problems at all, have been switching it on and off over the weekend no problems. However last night it did some updates, which were installed after i pressed the switch off button. Come this morning my pc will not start, it makes a funny whirling noise, the hard drive seems to be on as i can here it but my monitor is blank. I can use the on button to switch off and this does it instantly, unlike when its working i have to keep it pressed in for at least 30 secs to a minute.
the pc is just not giving me any options at all. Have tried F8 key but no joy, but then i didnt expect any as i dont get anything on the screen at all.
Any ideas before i am forced to take it down to pcworld and get them to charge me a lot of money to wipe the whole system clean :S
Thanks
Thomas

Thanks for quick reply.
The win 7 was a download so i do not have a startup disc, and as for the restore i cant use that as i cant get into windows
I do not get any msdos prompts or system loading information, all i get is a hard drive starting noise, so i am quite lost.:eek:

Try starting your pc,let it run for a few seconds then switch it off and turn it back on within a few seconds, this should show you an option to boot into safe mode becasue "Windows shut down unexpectedly etc"

Could be a hardware problem i suppose.

Before you bring it to them check all connections, and if your up for it ,open the cd box and check the connections there aswell.

How old is your pc?

I think is might be something to do with an update that it installed last night, as its been ok over the weekend, I have nothing connected to it as printer was not compatible, I do have a "F" Book external drive but that should be ok as its brand new,
The pc is about 3 years old, from Dell. I did the update test before downloading win 7 and all spec was ok apart frfom printer. I cant see that the printer is causing the problem. Sounds like it could be the drive, as it has a new noise !!!:(
Thanks for your help.

I would remove everything that isnt needed,i.e your external drive and printer and try to start again.

What updates did it do last night?

Everything removed, still wont start, just keep looking at a blank screen !! Printer was uninstalled before win 7 installed so i know that wont be the problem.
I do not know what updates were installed as i just clicked on the shut down button. It had the icon on it for installing updates before pc shuts down. Its something i have always done............... Lesson learnt dont do it any more lol. Just spoke to a repair man he seems to know what might be the problem as he has 3 other Dell machines with same problem so am going to pop it down to him to repair. will post the findings on here, asap. He said something about burnt it out !!!!!!!!! (pulling a big caravan with a mini ):sarc:

If you had another pc you could connect your hard drive up to it to see the problem, but saying that if he said it burnt it out maybe its best he looks at it.

From what he is describing, it sounds like he cannot even get to the bios startup screen.
...that would almost certainly be a hardware (or bios) problem.
..and with no video output it would be hard to tell where the problem lies.
I would be very interested to see what the Repair guy does to fix it.
(I had a similar problem with an old Athlon64. I tinkered with it for a little while, then I just decided to upgrade to a nice new PhenomeIIx4 and Mobo combo, stuck Win7 x64 on it and never looked back. It is now my Backup computer, which my kids use to do homework on. )
