a close family member has a new HP desktop computer. He purchased it because his older pc was VEEERRRY slow. It has been six months since he has made the purchase of the new HP and it is just as slow as the older pc. He lives a considerable distance from me but a few days ago i was in the area and experienced the problem of his pc for my self...

enter keywords into a search engine and click search.....the search results appear very quickly....but when clicking on a url....its is sooooo slow. It reminded me of the speed of one of the primitive first computers.

I checked his available hard disk memory and he still has @600gigs out of 700.....connect speed was 72.0 Mbps...he says he has defragmented. HE DONT have DSL but he is connected through a wireless router.....could it be his internet service provider? below is some of the specs of his pc.

HP Desktop
22" flat screen monitor
quad core processors(amd turion)
6 gigs RAM
@700gigs hard disk memory
running on windows 7 home premium

Most likely it's due to malware, toolbars and browser add-ons which have been accumulated over the past 6 months. Use malwarebytes.org to clean up the malware. Then, try a browser like Firefox or Chrome and see if it's fast. If so, that would eliminate the ISP as being the problem.

Hi Outburst. Welcome to Windows Seven Forums. We have a lot of very tech savy, intelligent people here at SF, unfortunately I'm not one of them but I would like to offer one suggestion. With such a new computer, personally I would be on the phone to tech support as fast as I could punch the number. You wouldn't want to do anything that might void the warranty and their tech reps should be able to tell him/her what kind of service to expect from the internet connection they have. Just my opinion. Please let us know how it works out and come to visit us from time to time, we're all very friendly people here.
Sincerely,
Anonymous lol

Sorry but this is the best I could do.
I used the tutorial for finding the missing info but still could not find it. Special Thanks to PooMan UK and DocBrown for their help in filling out these specs.
thanks for the responses guys, as far as browsers....i had him download chrome and i personally tried it and IE8 and no difference.....Tech support would be a good idea if i can get him to do it. I sent him a lengthy list of things to do to optimize his pc....he says he did those things but only he really knows....he lives 1000 miles from me so i cant personally fix it for himbut i wish i could. removing malware was one of the tops things on my list.

My Wifes new touchscreen HP turion tx2 had the same problems and a good defrag along with managing start up programs and changing to google chrome browser did the trick....its as fast a my pc now.

SO TELL ME GUYS.....with 72.0 Mbps could the problem at all be the connection or ISP provider.....MY PC only has 56.0Mbps and i couldnt hope for my pc to be any faster. His has 72.0 Mbps and very slow.

What Anti-Virus package or Internet Security package is your friend using?
What firewall is your friend using.

Did your friend do anything to modify the default settings in each?

It's certainly possible that his ISP is the problem. 72.0Mbps is a ton of bandwidth...I've got 15Mbps and am completely and totally happy. Hit a speedtest site like speedtest.speakeasy.net and see what comes back.

You didn't say what anti-malware software is installed and if the computer has been checked for malware. You need to make sure the computer is clean before looking at anything else.

Also, please make sure the 72 Mb/s is the speed of the ISP, not the wireless router. The speed of the router could be that, but the ISP might have another.

Please check the speeds at

Norton 360 is OK if it's the latest v4 (in fact v5 may be available now) and up to date, but even so I would run at least MBAM and TDSSkiller for a second opinion.

You can clean reinstall which is actually better than a new computer since most are larded with sponsors' bloatware: re-install windows 7

Until then you can clean up a factory bloatware install using these tips:

Uncheck everything in msconfig>Startup except AV and gadgets/sticky notes if you use them. Google the other listings to find out what they are. The factory utilities have better versions built into Windows 7 so they can all go except for notebook battery and hard drive monitors which can be helpful. The rest are freeloaders on CPU/RAM and Startup that can wait to start until you run them. Startup Programs - Change

Decide which programs you can do without over time, then use Revo Uninstaller in Advanced mode to uninstall them. Revo will first run the Windows uninstaller but when prompted to restart instead click "Next" to delete the bolded hidden Registry Keys and files which Revo cues up. Revo sets a System Restore point in case you delete something which needs to be restored.

Monitor whether bloatware uninstalls have corrupted System files by running SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker. Irreparable system files resulting in Performance problems can sometimes be remedied without reinstall by a Repair Install.

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials or Avast 5 with the Windows Firewall to gain back performance from more bloated AV's.

Check optional Windows Updates regularly for driver updates. You can trust Updates given by Windows 7 as they rarely malfunction and keep your Firewall fortified.

Enable automatic hardware driver updating: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...-your-hardware

Monitor Event Viewer>Admin View to google repeat errors to find how others have resolved them. Check also the Performance log on Advanced Tools page accessed by clicking WEI score link at Computer>Properties. Look for cued issues at top of Tools page, Generate a System Health Report.

Type "Solutions" in Start Search box to see solutions to problems sent and not. Windows 7 is interactive so always send Problem Reports.

Clean and order the HD perfectly using free state-of-the-art CCleaner ("Run Cleaner" and Registry tabs) then Auslogics Disk and REgistry defraggers monthly.

http://download.cnet.com/Auslogics-D...-10567503.html
http://download.cnet.com/Auslogics-R...-10678033.html

Save a Windows 7 backup image externally which may become preferable to the Recovery Disks and can reimage your HD or a replacement in 20 minutes:
Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup
System Image Recovery

You can extract any favorite apps like Works from HP Recovery Disks using this method: http://www.sevenforums.com/installa...are-after-clean-win-7-install.html#post488270

i have the latest version of norton 360 on my pc and im very impressed with it...atleast for antivirus that isnt free any way. just do a full scan and norton does the rest....if it needs a defrag norton will do it and if not it wont...that simple. but when it comes to removing bloatware and managing start up programs that has to be done manually.

GREGROCKER...thats very good advice....i manage start up programs on my pc's and remove unneccesary programs then degrag in combo with any browser besides IE and i couldnt ask for better performance.

In my recent experience N360 cannot remove the TDSS rootkit, though it may detect it. Dedicated anti-malware such as TDSSkiller, MBAM and Hitman Pro are needed to confirm the system is clean (or clean it).

Hi Outburst. Do you think there is anyway you can get this person to join this Seven Forums group himself. It is very great of you to do all this to help and I don't mean any disrespect to you, but it would be a lot easier to talk to him directly. Either way, you're a good person to do so much to help. Good for you. :D

Hi Outburst. I would be more than willing to try to convince your friend to join but the posting of e-mail addresses is not allowed. I have to say again that you should be proud of yourself for going to such lengths to help, but as the old quote goes: "You can lead a horse to water........". You talk about being a long way away from this person.

You can have them download TeamViewer for FREE from

www.teamviewer.com

then have them start it and follow the onscreen info to tell you their settings so you can also run TeamViewer on your end and then access their PC - remote control and file transfer too!

Then you can go in and check out his settings and run any virus / spyware tools remotely!

All for FREE!!

a close family member has a new HP desktop computer. He purchased it because his older pc was VEEERRRY slow. [snip] ...

I have friends come to me with the identical kind of problem all the time. I always remove all the crapware, the big A/V solutions, defrag the hard drive and install MSE. Not one of them has ever complained about slow equipment again. If the problem is really serious I just reload Windows from scratch, install all updates and MSE and turn 'em loose. I seldom hear back from them again about it. I build the system up and keep it as simple as possible and it "just works". Takes a little bit of time to do it but, as I said, the next time I hear from them they're crowing about how FAST their machines run.
