Periodic internet problems

While I've found Win7 to be a big step forward from Vista, I am having a particuarly irritating problem... the system failing to connect to the internet at all after a few days' use.

I had this problem a few days ago. It had been working fine but then all connection to the internet stopped (even though it was reporting that it was fine). I eventually tracked it down to a critical update, so a rollback fixed it.

Now I'm having problems again. This time the troubleshooter is reporting that the DNS server isn't responding. I noticed that a critical update was installed early this morning and did another rollback to the previous restore point but this hasn't worked.

Obviously this isn't a firewall issue since all other non-Win7 systems in the house work fine.

Any ideas? Also, how do I turn off automatic updates?

I'm having the same problem connecting to the internet, just a random thing so it's harder to pinpoint. I have been running Win7 for a few weeks now on a dual boot system with XP with no probs until a few days ago. I was not able to get online so I created a new profile and logged in using the new one and was able to get online, up until yesterday. Now both r locked out. I run the troubleshoting tool and it tells me it's the firewall, which is NOT running. Yet I can go into XP and get to the internet no problem. I do have ESET 4 smartsuite but for some reason the firewall part doesn't work in Win7, only the antivirus. Wondering if I should uninstall all together? But getting online, I click on IE icon and it acts like it doesn't even try to connect, like it's not connected and is not gonna even try to find one. so I think something is blocking it for sure...but what! I will try rolling back the latest updates...bbl:p

btw...I am able to see my router, I mean it shows me in the diagram my comp my router and connection to the internet with no red X going thru it so I assume it's getting connected but is blocking me out. In my device manager I do see under Network Adapters there is two errors about the ESET firewall...

Hi tikledpink, as it shows an error about dns servers, Click Start and in the Start Search box, type cmd and press Ctrl+Shift+Enter. Click on Ok to continue thru the UAC prompt.
Now type the following commands and press enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Note: wait for 20 secs after each command.

Delete all cookies and stuffs and you'll be out of issues.

Thanks. I did finally fix the problem - but it's very bizarre. The way I fixed it was to undo the restore point rollback.

Very odd. I hope MS aren't planning on releasing Win7 while the internet connection is in this broken state.

A lot of people are having issues with their connection on Win7.
It really would be good to know what is causing this weird problem!
Any idea?

I fixed mine as well...I uninstalled ESET's Smart Security 4 with antivirus and firewall..went back and installed just the antivirus program and works great now. Can even use Ventrilo and get online with games, only to get kicked by PB after playing for 15 minutes. something about drivers...

I've gone back to the dark side (Vista) for now. Windows 7 was proving to be too unstable for regular internet use.

I did pinpoint what I believe was the cause of the original problem. There seems to be an incompatibility with uTorrent, which breaks the internet connection after a few hours (on my machine, anyway). After reinstalling and NOT using uTorrent it worked fine ... until I installed something else (not sure what) which didn't make regular access to the internet but still broke it.

Unfortunately, although Win7 is a step in the right direction (and I know it was an RC version) but it hasn't really instilled me with enough confidence that the release version will be any better immediately. If Microsoft have simply put together a cleaner and more responsive Vista then surely the internet functions should work out the box, Release Candidate or not.

Sadly disappointing.
