Hi,
Starting recently I get persistent Windows Update errors (800B0100 and 8007065E) after each update (Windows 7 Pro, 32-bit). From reading previous posts and looking at the CheckSUR log, I believe the cause is missing and/or corrupted manifest/catalog files.

I have attached CheckSUR's log in the hope someone can help. As you can see, many of the files required for repair are reported as missing, and I do not have any other 32-bit Windows 7 machines around to retrieve them from and copy them back manually.

If anyone has any suggestions for how to replace these files, it would be greatly appreciated? Thanks!

-Adrian

I'll work on a fix protocol for these, and post it a little later.

Unfortunately, it doesn't include the CBSpersist files, which presumably have the SFC log in them, since the CBS.log file contains only the data since 10:53 this morning. Please zip and upload at least the latest two CBSpersist files so I can take a look.

Hi Noel,
Sorry I am causing you so much hassle! I've re-run Windows Update which has regenerated the CBS.log file, and also re-run CheckSUR. I've attached a ZIP with all the files in \Windows\Logs\CBS - hopefully this has all you need. They're a little different to before, since a new set of updates have just been made available.

Let me know if there is anything else you need.

No problem - I'm about 1/2 way through sourcing all the necessary files (and going word-blind as a result :) ), so we'll get there in the end.
It may take a couple of attempts to catch all the errors, but we will get there ;)

I've uploaded a file - adcaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder adcaa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be two folders inside it (Manifests, and Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

And the content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

Noel,
Progress - but not quite there! CheckSUR now reports no errors (see the attachments). However (after restart) Windows Update still reports the same errors: 800B0100 and 8007065E. Any suggestions what to try next?

It looks like your SoftwareDistribution folder is corrupted....

Open an Elevated Command Prompt
Run the following commands

NET STOP WUAUSERV
REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution SDOLD
NET START WUAUSERV

wait 15 minutes, and reboot
then wait 10 minutes, and open Windows Updates, and run a Check for Updates.

Install only the oldest update found - and reboot once installed
then go back to Windows updates and install the others.

The ones that fail with the 8024200D error can usually be installed simply by downloading the standalone patch and installing from the download.
I'd guess that KB2742599 is one of these?

Noel,
Installing the update manually worked. Since then there have been a few more automatic updates, and they all worked too. So - fingers crossed - I think we are cured!

Thank you so much for your help - very much appreciated! Now my only question would be, how this happened in the first place and what does everyone else do to fix it?

The common cause of this type of error is a forced shutdown of the machine while it's updating - either because of power outage or impatience :)

Glad everything seems OK now - good luck with it!
