Rather than using the laptop mike any more for recording from a keyboard digital piano as it's not only a bit muffled but you have to keep the volume down to avoid final distortion, what's the best way using Win 7 to record just the signal ? From what I understand you can then alter the pitch to suit etc. as my hearing is not the best due to a rugger accident years ago....

Thanks

It would depend on the particular keyboard and what interfaces and applications you have on the PC.

I have a home recording studio and a MIDI keyboard that has a USB connection. I can connect via USB but I have to use my recording studio program to record (Cakewalk Sonar).

It's very similar to the one in the pic below called Acoustic Solutions but unfortunately I can't find any more info on it. It has an OUT 3/4 jack at the back which goes into the headphone jack symbol on the pc, but there's no USB option and why I'm hoping that an inexpensive audio interface will produce better recordings.

A USB "recording interface unit" such as the Focusrite Scarlett Solo (Focusrite is a UK company) would work. There are similar others available too. This gives you a start on what to get.

Behringer may be OK for your application. Its not well considered in the recording community.

Its not the sound, its the drivers, support, quality of build, etc. Behringer tends to cost less but "you get what you pay for".

In my case it will always be the sound unfortunately no matter how well made it is....
