What should i know first before doing this? What should i do to better ensure that my host PC isn't affected by anything that makes it past the VM? I hear that setting it to NAT can help in some cases, but i'm not sure.

I have AVAST and i also use Malwarebytes on my host computer. I'm not downloading the most destructive ones. Just something like CursorMania and SmileyCentral stuff like those, or similar. Maybe even BonziBuddy XD.

You should know that there are infections that can escape virtual machines. This article is old. VM apps have gotten better. But so has malware. Here is a more recent article - but it does not impact VMWare.

Websites that serve up CursorMania and SmileyCentral can silently infect your VM with nastier stuff.

You should know that many infections can tell if they are running inside of a VM. Some do nothing while inside a VM. Others do different things when running in a VM vs. running on a real computer.

You should know that you are asking your question in the wrong forum :-)
