Platform Update (KB2670838) for windows 7

Hello,

after installing KB2670838 this morning, W7 64-bit booted in "test mode". Had to use instructions from other thread to remove watermark at bottom right corner. Weird....

Cheers,
Miki

I installed this update today and it's definitely done something strange to the text rendering on Firefox 19.

Take a look at this screen from the BBC News website.

Firefox Grab.png

Notice the text in the middle and on the top right hand side column. If you click on the browser or scroll up or down the text rights itself, but then another part goes wrong

I've also seen it also here, on the MS website when I was reviewing the info about the update and on my iGoogle homepage. I'm going to see if it's affected any other apps.

FYI - I'm running a laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470

I had to uninstall.

Using IE9 with no toolbars.
Would not connect to any web site.
Everything is back to normal now.

At least it uninstalled with no residual damage.

Having just done a check I'm pretty certain the update has affected a Firefox add-on rather than Firefox itself. I restarted with add-ons disabled and the rendering looked normal to me. Also IE9, Chrome, Opera and Maxthon 3 are all as you'd expect.

So I now have to go through the process of finding the add-on at fault.

Ok, I think I've found the add-on. It appears to be Classic Compact Options 16.0.1

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classic-compact-options/

I'll do some double checking and then consider contacting the developer. If it comes down to it though I wouldn't be upset to see it disabled as it's not something like Adblock Plus or Tab Utilities which I consider essential.

Just installed the Platform Update and IE10 (over the earlier IE10RC/Update combo) and everything OK so far.
Now to check the other browsers :)

Just clean-installed a system (SP1) and started the updates - was immediately offered IE10 rather than IE9. It's downloading now (VERY early in the update sequence) so it'll be interesting to see what falls apart :)

I take it back- all 3 computers that i put it in are behaving funky when using ie9, keeps crashing when it is looking for an add on- then locks up
So I uninstalled the update and all is fine now
and 7 of my clients are seeing the same problems and worse so i remotely logged onto their computers and removed the update too- all is fine on those too
Was this an update for ie10?
I now unchecked this update since it is an important not a critical update

It's one of the pre-requisite updates for IE10, as I understand it.

now don't you think Microsoft should have said something in the update info so we could decide if we wanted it or not? and it is strange that Micrososft did not test this with ie9 because it breaks it.
On their windows update forum so many are complaining about this update

Or if you decide to install ie10 this update should be imbeded in it

Just received the Windows update for this today (Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838)) and had to immediately uninstall.

Killed Firefox 19 and Explorer 9.

It may be OK with Explorer 10 but I don't want to be forced into updating and using Explorer.

Firefox is my primary preferred browser, so until it's fixed will not be installing this update.

It's interesting that since I posted last night, so many other people have started having similar problems.

After I uninstalled the update yesterday and it fixed everything, I forgot to hide the update and it installed again overnight. So I had to uninstall again today, which once again fixed my issues, so the update is definitely not right with some configurations.

If it helps others, I'm an IT Tech, so I went through a couple of different things before uninstalling as follows:

  • Disabled all Add-ons - no fix. As I rarely use IE, I don't use the same add-ons in IE as I do in Firefox, so I did not expect this to work really.
  • Restarted a number of times with various system settings disabled or altered - No fix
The issue I had with both browsers was that they simply would not startup, both displaying error messages saying the app had experienced issues with startup.

Now a possible fix and why it works for some and not others:

I also use the Roboform toolbar like others in this thread. It's such a normal part of my web use that it's just there all the time. Because of this, I have to admit that I did not disable the toolbar, I never even thought about it. So disabling it may fix the issue for me, not that I want to do that because I use it such a lot. I also have it installed in IE, so there is consistency across both browsers for me in that respect. It is the only toolbar I use.

If all those that had no problems would confirm it's use by them or not, I think it may go towards a real cause and provide an area where a fix should probably come from. ie Siber Systems Inc.

I'm going to put something on their forum anyway and see what they think, I'll update when I get an answer

on 3 of the computers, i had the bing toolbar, on the others that were my clients, there were NO toolbars
I still think it should have been put in there that this was a prereq for ie10. Then I would not have installed it until I was sure everyone else has no problems with ie 10 on windows 7

Also more people need to go to my link I posted and complain. If enough complain maybe Microsoft will see it and consider a fix for it.
I also hid it so it doesn't come back to reinstall

I seem to be having the same problem. After update KB2670838 was installed on my computer, the 32bit version of Internet Explorer would no longer function. Google chrome and Internet Explorer 64 bit would work though.

After uninstalling the update, IE 32bit works fine.

First bug really encountered with windows 7. Update jiggers windows live mail and firefox v.19.

Live mail reports a problem, checks for a solution then lets me close it. Firefox crashes on start as well. I'll leave it uninstalled.

this update should have been more clearer. It is suppose to be a pre req for ie 10 but no where does it say that on their info page for this update. One is suppose to assume that is what is for- NOT
It should have said: This is a pre requisite for IE10. Please install this update prior to installing ie10

and of course it should have been tested better so it would not break ie9 but i guess if you installed this and immediately put on ie10 you would not have seen ie9 broke, but what about the other programs that broke with it?-duh

I too have had problems with this update but the symptoms were different from what I've seen elsewhere. I applied it to a Dell desktop and a Toshiba laptop, so no commonality of hardware. Both systems were Win7 HP 64 bit. In each case it trashed my aero desktop - no matter what I tried I could not get the aero functionality back, so in the end I did a restore on both systems and they now work fine again. On one of the systems I had Windows Live Mail 2012 installed and it made this unuseable - the main windows within Widows Mail had black backgrounds with white lettering (!!) and when I scrolled down the lettering became illegible - like each line superimposed on itself but slightly offset - very strange.
