Please help: Unable to remove or create Homegroups Win 7

I hope someone can help me:
Unable to remove or create a Homegroup on Win 7. I incorrectly set up laptop machine to have a homegroup. Not sure what happened but my desk top computer became attached to this group maybe I inadvertently set this function,,,

I attempted to remove the homegroup from the lap top and desktops machine. I stopped and disabled the 2 home services on both machines.

I rebooted both. Sadly the homegroup still shows in explorer.

My desktop still thinks it part of a homegroup.there is no password but.when I try to leave the group which should be a simple task?...windows 7 reports it cannot remove the homegroup. Can anyone help or suggest a way I can resolve this.. I need a working homegroup on my desktop machine.

You will first need to enable those services that you turned off.

This is another Windows 7 bug apparently so you need to delate a file to fix it.

The fix for this problem seems to be Deleting the file idstore.sst under C:\windows\serviceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking

You may need to go into Folder Options and put a check mark to show hidden files and folders, this will allow you to see the peer networking folder so that you can delete the idstore.sst file.

Once everything at peer Networking Grouping is running you may also need to do this...

Start the Task Manager
Click on the service Tab
Find the "HomeGroupProvider"
and then stop the service.


You may need to go back into services and enable Peernetworking again after the fix. Don't forget to restart all machines making the adjustments.


In most cases these adjustments should allow you to leave the Homegroup.

Thanks for the info. Sadly I am still experiencing same problems. I believe I did exactly as you indicated on both machines. I noticed sst's in that peer file with sst.new as a suffix

Still get the homegroup and I am still unable to remove it with windows. Also I am unable to create a homegroup even tho the laptop does not have one. Any more idea please anyone

This problem has been around a long time and unfortunately the fix I listed is the only one available for this particular problem.

You can check out the threads about this problem at TechNet and see if you can find any thing that might help.

I may have found a fix seems to have worked for me..other can try if they get the same problem..make sure the registry is backed up . will feed back f it does not work

relates to error 1709

Just go into the logon properties of the peer service and select "This Account". Browse your computer and find the "Local Service" account. Wipe out the password so that it is blank and apply. You will be presented with a dialog stating the that the account has been granted the login as a service right. Then start your service. That should fix your problem. I have seen this issue countless times and there are many, many reasons why it could have happened but it's nothing to worry about.
