Before resetting the modem, could you browse the internet buy directly plugging into the internet port of the modem?

Check your machine ipv4 that it does not have any static IP or DNS entry.

Do a ipconfig /all and show as the result.

Otherwise reset modem via 192.168.100.1.

I have the modem plugged direclty into the computer but my computer is still showing a ip from the router and iprelease iprenew and cleardns cache is not working

I wonder if this is the same case as my ISP... My ISP gave me the same modem, they lock my device's MAC address in their system, so I can only have this one particular device connected to the modem. The device can be a router or a computer's NIC. Try calling your ISP's technical support and ask if they lock a certain MAC address for your customer ID...

Great point zzz2496!! I completely forgot about that. Many cable companies do this. However a tech showed me a way to get it to work without needing to call tech support.

Turn everything off, plug your computer or router into the cable modem, and turn on the computer or router (wait until it is booted up completely). Disconnect the cable wire from the modem. Make sure your computer or router is plugged into the modem and power on the modem and wait until it completely boots up. Plug in the cable wire wait for about 2 minutes for the modem to re-program. If this does not work repeat the steps taking longer between steps. Works like a charm here.

Side Note: One time I was doing this because I changed out my firewall and I could not get it to work. So I modified the steps for this firewall. Unplug the Modem from the cable and the Ethernet. Plug in the cable wire and power on the modem with NOTHING attached to the Ethernet side. Let the modem sit for at least 5 minutes with no devices plugged into it. With your computer or router off plug in the Ethernet wire and then power on the device wait about 2 minutes. The cable modem should register the MAC address for the one device and all will work correctly.

If not, reset the modem but a call to ISP explaining what doesn't work would be good before he does the reset.

aem, different ISP have different policy about who/what can access their network. It's their right to lock MAC address to certain customer ID. If the ISP locked to his router's MAC address, his laptop won't work at all, because the MAC address is unrecognized, thus blocked from entering layer 3 negotiation (IP sub stack).

I personally won't suggest a modem reset. A cable modem is a whole different beast compared to a DSL modem. It got specific ISP settings in it that will spell TROUBLE if you play with it. On the other hand, if it's a DSL modem, I wouldn't hesitate to suggest a reset, because there' s really nothing to worry about in it.

I have tried everything mentioned in this whole thread numerous times and also please note I have no firewall on and no antivirus software on. Also I have tried manually setting the default gateway and ip and all that with no luck so I guess maybe ill put in my other nic card

The modem is a learning device, it will learn from the start what machine is connected to it during initial setup, this will be logged at the ISP end. This is not to say the modem cannot learn more MAC addresses. People buy new machines so the modem has to know that MAC address has changed and it has to learn this. I have not come across a modem that doesn't have this capability.

Have you spoken to your ISP, resetting the modem would be what they might end up asking you to do anyway.

I have called the isp but didn't get to technical at the time just asked if everything looked okay on their end and he said yes he was seeing that everything was okay and he could read a signal from the modem and he said he could tell it was hooked up properly he even sent a signal through to reset the modem which didn't help. I have an older laptop which I don't use cuz the cd drive is busted and the built in wireless card doesn't work but I pluged it into the modem then reset it and it works fine so I know the modem can change automatically for different computers cuz the internet works fine on it actually web pages load faster than on my desktop which has a faster processor and more ram

Modems as i said has a learning capability, it has a cache that it uses to id machine that is hooked up to it. Often even accessing the modem firmware is problematic if you are using a non original machine that originally connect to it...it just need to learn who is knocking on the door.

So all good now?
