Power button is broken, how do I start up my laptop without it?

All right, so here is what happened. I accidentally dropped my laptop, and now the power button is broken (the button is located on the right side, the same place i dropped it)

My question is the following:
I remember seeing a few articles a while back detailing how you can open up your laptop without using the power button. How do you do this?

I might be wrong of this being possible, but I don't think so. Can I change something in the bios or do I download a program in order to makes this possible. If my memory serves me correctly, you can also open your laptop by typing a password on a keyboard in order to start up a 'shut down' pc.

Please help me out, I don't dear to close my laptop because the button no longer works.

Other than replacing the power button you could just put the computer to sleep when you're not using it then use the keyboard to awaken it.

You need to check in Device Manager that the keyboard's power management setting is set to "Allow this device to wake the computer".

You also need to change your power settings so that the laptop is put to sleep when you close the lid rather than power down.

My desktop PC BIOS can be set to power up my PC just by pushing a keyboard button or clicking my mouse. I would be surprised if a laptop had that feature but in your case it couldn't hurt to have a look for it. Look for "Power on by keyboard" or something similar. As far as using a program to do it, if the laptop is powered off windows isn't running and neither will any programs, so it won't work. As mentioned, sleep mode or hibernate is probably your best option until you can fix the broken power button.

You can ignore the part about soldering/repairing/relocating the power switch if you want.

What you want to pay attention to is how he turns the laptop on by connecting the wires from the switch. That would be your temporary solution.

Well, How did you solve your problem? The power button from my laptop is loose and I really need to keep using my computer for school and maybe find a place to fix it over the weekend, but as of right now I can't afford to not use my computer. How do I power up my laptop using the keyboard since I let someone else borrow it and when I wanted to use it, it was shut down and the power button was loose.

I gave this YouTube video a look - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoqE5qvQ6WM - and had our HP 6000 power button working again in about 1/2 hour! There are a couple of ribbons for power and volume control that are interchangable. I swapped them with one another. The power button worked, but the other buttons to the right of it do not (bad ribbon).

They are fairly easy to change out. I just ordered a couple of replacements for about a buck apiece on eBay (including shipping!)

I know this post is old, I just want to put my solution here for reference for someone have the same issue.
I used HP Elitebook 8570p, there is an option in BIOS 'Turn on unit when the lid is being open' will resolve the power button problem. Hope your PC have the same BIOS option.
