Preventing Software Connecting To Internet

The app has a button labeled help. When i clik on it the IE window appears and navigates to the site help page. This means to me that the software (the app) is initiating a connection to the internet and I do not want this to happen. Am I not understanding the functioning?

You are not understanding the functioning. Its just telling IE to run and open this URL. That is all. IE is not running as part of the application, its running as its own. The same as if you doubled clicked upon an Internet shortcut.

help me understand then. what is function of firewall, if not for something like this? other buttons on the app launch IE, not just help. also, i place url in IE's restricted sites and i am still able to type addy and go there, so now i am not understanding function of IE restricted sites (separate issue?).

i seem to be in need of dummie guide to internet blocking.

cyclic, i think i am approaching 'all else fails' mode. standby ...

Setting sites in "Restricted" doesn't prevent you from going to those sites, it prevents those sites from using specific features provided by IE, like ActiveX. Furthermore, your firewall is setup to block the application in question from accessing the internet, not IE. Thus IE is not blocked from the internet.

therefore, assume i set rules correct, i can rest easy that inbound & outbound firewall blocking of the app is positive function?
