Solved Preventing Taskhost.exe and CompTelRunner heavy CPU usage

Hello

I've just dusted off a Windows 7 laptop of mine and it seems that the two processes above grab as much CPU as possible, sometimes up to 80+ % and last for quite some time.

Does anyone know what launches the processes and what I can do to disable them?

I know these are Windows processes so I don't really like to terminate them in Task Manager.

So i googled and saw somebody else had this problem but only for Taskhost.exe ,, See the link : The taskhost.exe application consumes 50-60% of the average cpu - Microsoft Community

I would Suggest the following :

1) Download MalwareBytes and make a scan
2) Keep Watch Out of Task Manager (Try To see every minute because it might cool down)

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I'd imagine windows update service is the issue,
When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.
You might also double check to make sure the windows update service is not running before attempting to manually installing either of these updates
Switch the service back to default after you're done.

After switch your windows update settings back to what you had prior and manually check for updates and the rest should show up shortly.

Thanks to both respondents. Based on the postings above and links therein, I have also removed KB2952664 and disabled the RAC job in Windows Scheduler, and I have checked for KB3020369 and KB3172605 and both are installed.

I did have trouble recently with Windows Update on the laptop in question though.

Now the laptop has been rebooted, I will have to wait and see...

KB2952664 is a tenacious animal. It kept re-installing somehow!
