Previous Version Text File

In the context(r-clik) or properties of a text (.doc, .txt ...)file there exists a 'restore previous version' option. However, although I know there was a previous version it has always said 'no previous versions'. Is there something I need to set in order for at least one previous version to always exist?

Its present on everything, but as you've found NOT allways relevant

It depends on how/what you've done.
(even truer on a text file) - installed via notepad??

I went to


Start > Administrative Tools > Services



For the 'Status' column it is blank and for the 'Startup Type' column it is 'Manual'.


I have never been in this tool before so I guess these settings is the default. What should I do next?

You can use step 6 in Option 1 below to set the services as per the red warning box in the second tutorial link below.

That's an incredibly unreliable tool to begin with, being too tied to system restore, which is in itself unreliable. If you have something important to keep many versions of, use a real backup/version control/file copies/whatever you can trust and not the broken built-in thing.

ooooo ... well this is spooky. Not sure what to do now. Think I will just get in the habit of doing 'save as' and afix my own versioning
