Printing from Win 7 laptop to Win XP desktop

I've been attempting to network (I have to do this,right ? ) my elderly mothers new Win 7 laptop with her Win XP desktop so as for her to be able to use the printer that's attached to the XP desktop without her having to go into another room and attach a cable.Nothing but problems attempting to network the two pc's together (I THINK that's done now) and to get the printer driver set up on the Win 7 (I think that's done too but,I cannot seem to "link" all of this together.When I attempt to "add a printer" to the win 7 machine,I receive the message that "Windows cannot connect to the printer.Access is denied".

There is a wireless router attached to the pc with the printer attached to it.So,I don't believe this is the problem.Also,the XP machine (the one with the printer) isn't firewalled.So,I don't believe that can be the problem either.Please-if anyone has any ideas,please post them here and I will get back to you tomorrow night.Have to get to sleep now to be ready for my next 12 hour shift at work in the morning.Thank you all very,very much.I've butted my head around with Google over this for hours now (as I always do with any problem before ending up here).So,all help is immensely appreciated.Again,thank you all,very,very much.And,goodnight !

Share a Printer from XP to Windows 7

Greg rocker-I got an email from sevenforums with a (slightly) lengthy reply from you about my post.But,when I actuall wen to the forum to look for more posts,yours was no longer there !! ??? Anyway-thank you very much.I can do nothing about this until at least Friday.But,your help is much appreciated.And,just to let you know-my router is connected to the XP machine wirelessly ( I had more luck connecting it that way for some reason.Go figure).But,now,again-in case you misunderstood part of my post-the Win 7 machine CAN see the printer ! BUT ! It TELLS me...that "Windows cannot connect to the printer.Access is denied".

Your post could be read two ways: that you have the printer plugged into the XP PC, and then later it seems to say it is plugged into the router. I wrote my original post about how to add the printer as a network printer if it is plugged into a router with ethernet cable. Then I realized that I likely had been reading it wrong and your issue is trying to detect the XP PC on the network to gain access to its printer.

Please give a detailed step-by-step of what happens when you apply the steps in Share a Printer from XP to Windows 7 which should work if the printer is plugged into the XP PC.

Before I do this "share a printer from XP-7 (Which I've done more than once already and the results are the same,I receive the message "Windows cannot connect to the printer.Access is denied"),I have to ask (ignorant question and,I'm sure the answer is "no" but),do I need any sort of cables for the win 7 machine (laptop) for this whole thing to work ? I want my mother to be able to print her documents from the laptop pc wirelessly to the XP which has the printer attached to it.The XP is also where the router is attached.The router is not attached to the printer.Also,the XP machine has a dongle attached (for the wireless internet router) (just to let you know). I thought I should also let you know that as I was originally trying to set this whole mess up,the way that I "added the printer" to the 7 machine was by disconnecting the printer from the XP and using the plug n play option and the printer software disc.And,it appears that there are 2 copies of it....."Lexmark 330 series (copy 1)" and,"Lexmark 3300 series". But,neither work. When I click to print on the "copy 1" I receive the message,"The handle is invalid". When I click to print on "Lexmark 3300 series" I receive the message: Lexmark 3300 Series:usb001 Communication not available The printer cannot communicate with the computer. Try these solutions: Disconnect & reconnect the usb cable Disconnect & reconnect the printer's power cable or restart your computer. Added info...when I right clicked on the printer (on the win 7 machine) under network & sharing and then clicked on "connect" I receive the message "Windows cannot connect to the printer.access is denied"

Here we go again: You said the XP machine "is where the router is attached" which can only be read to mean that you have the XP machine plugged into the router by ethernet cable. Then a few sentences later you said the XP PC has a wireless dongle that connects it to the router. Which is it? It should not be both. If the XP PC is near the router then I'd plug it in by ethernet cable and unplug the dongle.

Can you see that there is editing gibberish strewn throughout your post which makes it unintelligible? Why should we have to struggle to understand you when you can proofread what actually posts to clean it up?

If you are receiving access is denied then XP is not sharing the printer. It shows clearly how to share it in the steps I gave you. I asked you to go through those steps and report back on each one so we know each gets done. Do you plan to do that?

Okay-you are misunderstanding apparently...The router is used wirelessly for internet purposes throughout the household.It is attached to the XP via dongle.I've tried using ethernet cable when I first got the router to hook it up to the Xp that way.But,it became a severe headache.So,dongle was easier set up. Understand now ?? I'm sorry.I'm not a grammar expert.AND-I TOLD you THAT link you gave me is EXACTLY the same link I used to set this whole process up in the first place ! If you don't understand what's going on,I'm sorry.I'll try elsewhere

I did not ask if those steps were the ones you used before or not. I asked you to work through those steps again and report back results on each. This will confirm that you have XP sharing enabled. If you passed that step and it still didn't work, then I would have you run the XP Network and Sharing wizard which can also sort this out. I've gone through this over a dozen times before.
