Problem after disabling windows features.

I disabled some windows features that I was sure I wasn't using and after some time I noticed that I actually needed IE9 because of compatibility issues with my campu's homepage.

Now to the problem, after re-enabling IE9 and other features of windows i got the message "Configuring Windows updates x% complete Do not turn off your computer.".

Those compatibility issues are not with IE10 right ? It's with other third party browsers ? If so, can you download directly from microsoft site IE10 and install it without re-enabling turned off windows features ?

0x80070643 is in eventlog. To fix it: Error codes
So do:
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9666880

And if still problems: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683 in standard mode. Still problems then in aggressive mode

You first method fixed the problem! It didn't work at the first attempt, after I applied the fix and the computer restarted it got stuck again in the Configuring Windows Updates screen for very long time but I gave a second chance (because I like giving second chances) and manually shut down and the next Configuring Windows Updates screen went fast from 0% to 100% and right into the login screen.

I hope this is a definitive fix, if it still persists I'll come here and ask for help again :o. Thank you everyone for your replies.

Did you apply the fix, rebooted and then enable windows features? Or did you apply the fix, then enable windows features and then reboot?

Correct method is: apply the fix, then reboot. Then you can do anything you want

Well damn me, I applied the fix then enabled features and rebooted at last. At least it worked, somehow.

Hi, I know it has almost been a week since I last posted on this thread but somehow the problem came back and now not even safe mode is booting. I havent changed any system configuration but somehow the last restart I did gave me a Windows is configuring updates message and after the reboot it got stuck again in the configuring windows, after that I shut down and try to restart the computer in safe mode but now it gets stuck in the Please wait screen.

Now the worse part, I tried botting into the Repair your computer menu but the start up repair says no errors found and for some reason the only system restore point that I get is from a couple of hours ago. What can I do now? Im posting from my sisters ipad...

Why you only have 1 restore point? Did you reserve little space for restore points? Anyway revert back to that restore point. The restore point has been made PRIOR TO installing windows updates. Works?

Then install the updates in 1 by 1 or 2 in a batch. Untill you know what update screws up your system. So write down what you installed!

It didnt work, the only restore point that it has also gets stuck in the configuring windows updates screen. Do note that I had automatic windows update off and i havent installed any programs recently.

A restore point will be made:
  • manually
  • install/uninstall program
  • install/uninstall windows updates
Any idea what/who did create the restore point?
Any idea why windows updates were installed then (you told automatic windows update has been turned off!)

Is it really "configuring windows updates screen" you're talking about?? What is exactly displayed on screen?

The last program i installed was the witcher game but i seriously doubt that was the problem because it doesnt mess with the system files and, as my previous post said, i never did a windows update; it all began when i disabled internet explorer and desktop gadgets in the disable windows features option in uninstall or change programs, the first thing it did was give me that screen after the reboot, but it was a long time ago (about 3 weeks)

I would advise not disabling I.E.
Whether you use I.E. or not as your browser of choice.
Windows 7 needs I.E. to work properly.

What works for me is setting I.E. at it's default settings and selecting it as my default browser. That being said; I don't use I.E. as my normal browser. I use Firefox.
My thoughts and I don't have proof is that Windows 7 needs and wants I.E. to work properly. Anything you get from Microsoft, ie. Updates, tools, programs, Fixit's, KB's ect wants I.E.
As far as I know I.E. sitting there doing nothing until a Microsoft something request it's use hurts nothing.
I.E. is not just a add on browser like Firefox or Chrome. It is part of Windows 7.

Ok I reinstalled windows without deleting the partitions, I had very important files that I didn't backup and can't afford to loose them. I installed all drivers in the correct order and now am downloading all the windows updates.

I suppose there's nothing wrong by downloading and installing all the updates labelled as Important?, is there something I should be warned about? The only files I recovered from windows.old are from the Users folder so I guessthat won't make any interference with the updates.

Why do you ask after doing it? Assume I say no...you're stupid... then I'm to late.
Anyway...there are no users define yet. It won't interfere.
