Problem : Windows 7 RC1 random crashes

Actually, this is kinda embarassing.

I found out that the 15-minutes "power save" option made my computer freeze. Now I disabled it and I didn't encounter any new freeze yet. Thanks to everyone who helped me :D

That can likely be fixed by changing BIOS ACPI options.

You can change your power options to set any way you like.
I have never shut down HDDs, but shut down monitor - 30 min.
to restart the monitor i use the space bar.
if your HDD is shutdown it takes a long time to restart it, then restart the monitor. it then has to restore the files needed to come back.
that is why I NEVER SHUTDOWN HDDs.

It can crash at almost any instant (when downloading file, when computer is idle, sometime even when the screen is turn off for power saving) i have tried almost every suggestion on the forum

i have fresh reinstalled Win7, format all partition, run check disk for bad sector etc...

sounds like your WOW suks, uninstall it, since it starting crashing your system.

Are you guys running uTorrent?

uTorrent is crashing my PC.

No, it's more likely to be your 64-bit Ralink network driver.

I don't have an ralink network driver :S

We've established that it's uTorrent causing problems with Win7x64 on another thread and if you go through the uTorrent forums, you'll see that there's plenty of other people with the same problem.

Basic troubleshooting shows that it's not a problem specifically with Windows 7 and uTorrent as I can produce dozens of folks using both without issues. We have seen several network drivers that do completely lockup the system under heavy uTorrent load. Ralink was the most notable.

+1, blaming the Op system or Utorrent is rediculous. The real problem is that people seem to think that using Auto settings in bios are going to work perfectly for them.

The drivers themselves are not the problem. In fact Windows 7 places a bit more load on the chipset comparied to Vista, therefore some simple voltage adjustments are required to get the chipset stable.

I can assure you all that the bios Auto settings are incorrect more often than not. Don't be afraid to manually adjust your bios settings people, it's not scary and it's not overclocking, in fact it's standard procedure from where I'm standing. :geek:

Crashing w/4GB RAM

CORSAIR TWIN2x4096-8500C5 (2x2GB 1066mhz RAM on the Shuttle APPROVED list of RAM for my system)
I am running an Athlon XP 3800+ x64 w/Windows 7 x64... nothing is overclocked.

The issue is that the memory passes memtest when installed individually, but when both are in the system I get a BSOD after 5-30 mins, I can't even run at 800, let alone 1066. I have been deferred away by CORSAIR for this issue... Also, if I manually set the clock settings, I don't have the option to set just some of them to auto and I am only given timings for 5 of the 10 values. When I set those 5, then my comp won't boot and I have to reset BIOS.

Here is a tech support thread from a few weeks ago when I was trying to get it figured out... don't have any idea what to set for other timings, and if left at default... then no boot. help?

Technical Support Please update the BIOS to the latest and try the followings:

DDR voltage: 2.1v
Memory Frequency: DDR2 1066
tCL: 5
tRCD: 5
tRP: 5
tRAS: 15
5/19/2009 4:06:27 PM

Me If i set manually, I must set ALL the clock timings. What do I put for the other settings?
TwTr: 1-3 clocks
Trfc0/1: 75ns-195ns
Twr: 3-6 bus clocks
Trtp: 2-3 clocks
Trc: 11-26 clocks
Trrd: 2-5 clocks

I have tried different RAM since and had the same issue when both DIMMS are installed, it is either a voltage issue or a mobo issue at this point. I really just need to know what to set for the above timings since I can't just set SOME of them to AUTO... it is all or none.

1. recommend you remove 1 stick and simply run with 1 stick 2GB.
see if that cures the problem. place a small piece of tape on that stick mark it #1.

2. remove stick #2 and mark it.... insert Stick #1 and run it. see if that cures your problem.

3. Now make a note as to where #1 adn #2 stickes are inserted.
it could make a difference.

4. insert both sticks. mark position, if you have problems swap #1 and #2 sticks. REASON: if one stick is faster than the other. the slowest stick must be in SLOT #1.
I care less what the manufacture says - Both are the SAME.. phooy.
I have found over many years that NO ALL STICKS RUN THE SAME SPEED. AND IF THE DIFFERENCE IS VERY MUCH - THEY CRASH.

I will try swapping their location... and to answer your first questions:

Yes I have run w/2gb and that is perfectly stable on AUTO SPD settings.

The problem is only when using 2 sticks of RAM. I have tried both DIMMS in both slots and had the same resulting crashes, however I am pretty sure it is a voltage issue, although as noted in my previous post I don't know what to set for all the timings and when i have just toyed with voltage it is unstable.

There use to be a windows program that ran tests on memory sticks and recorded there speeds. I forget what the name is... but you ran tests on 1 stick at a time... in slot #1. then you could honestly see if there was a difference... remember it is MANDATORY that the slowest stick be first.
almost any difference is speed does affect... and from what you say, you have a speed difference. and that is causing your problem.. (JMO).

Most memory companies sell "MATCHED STICKS" yes, they do cost more, but worth the price. Most retailers sell sticks out of a mass produced bulk package. NOT THE SAME.

program is Memtest86 (FREE)

Ok... so i tried swapping back and forth, the 2nd set of RAM i am testing with is Mushkin Enhanced High Performance RAM 2x2gb, both sets of RAM came as a pair in a single pack. Still crashing... I need to adjust my timings, but there are several timing options that I am not sure what to set at. Namely these:
TwTr: 1-3 clocks ?
Trfc0/1: 75ns-195ns ?
Twr: 3-6 bus clocks ?
Trtp: 2-3 clocks ?
Trc: 11-26 clocks ?
Trrd: 2-5 clocks ?

Also, someone commented that they upped the voltage on the northbridge, is that the CPU voltage or what would that be called in my BIOS (or is that just the RAM voltage i have been playing with?)

I'd set the BIOS to DEFAULT... your using a RC - buggy as hell version.
Seems almost worthless. since RC is known to be so BUGGY it was the worse version of Windows 7 (RC and RC1) for MS to release. Win7 x64 is still so crappy that over 80 % of every Forum is full of it does not work.
