Use 32-bit. Obviously a driver issue.

Hi SuperV, welcome to the forums,

Was it running ok as just a fresh install? What software have you install recently as something incompatible may be effecting your system.

LOL baarod, beat me to it as always :p
Also, some hardware specs may be usefull too

I have more RAM than 4GB. And a 64-bit processor.

The crashes shouldn't happen in 64bit.

It's basically a fresh install :D

I don't have much installed, just AntiVir (avira), MSN, Steam and some other things. Nothing special.

You might want to check Device Manager and see if theres any generic drivers from Microsoft installed (particularly for things like chipset) as its always best to install the drivers direct from the manufacturer.

I'm not that "skilled" with the Device Manager. I'm afraid I could mess something up. What particular drivers do I have to check, and how do I realize they're Microsoft and not from the manfacturer?

Sorry to hear that. You should just stick with whatever OS your computer came with because you have one of those special Dell XPS 420 that are slow slow slow and crash crash crash. It comes from close proximity to corrupted Intel hardware with fruit on it.

Open Start, type devmgmt.msc and press <Enter>. Look for any devices with exclamation points superimposed on their icons. The device tree will normally be pre-expanded to show them. Alternatively you could just post a msinfo32 dump for us: open Start, type msinfo32 and press <Enter>. Select Save from the File menu, save the file, zip and attach to your reply to this post.

when you open device manager, and find any device.
if you DELETE that device, close device manager, then reboot.
MS will install the appropiate device driver.
1. suggest you print a copy of all devices.
2. delete them one at a time and reboot.
3. do not use any beta drivers, and do not go to any manufacture site and obtain drivers.
4. There is a nice FREE program which will give a detailed list the SPECs plus other stuff in your computer. Belarc.
Code:

you might use this to upload and show specs plus for your system

How about we just have a look at his .nfo first before we have him start deleting things randomly, huh?

x86 and x64 programs = PROBLEMS

rather hard to read since .nfo has a max of 500kb. but from what I can see it is UNSIGNED DRIVERS, wrong version of programs and safari errors, plus many other errors. I strongly suggest a CLEAN install. and I MEAN CLEAN no 3rd party or 32b programs.
Code:
<Details>Faulting application name: Safari.exe, version: 4.528.16.0, time stamp: 0x499e4dec
Faulting module name: WebKit.dll
is this a x64 program
Code:

<Command>"c:\program files (x86)\steam\steam.exe" -silent</Command>
or this
Code:

Messenger and Steam are both 32-bit applications, but I used them fine on 64-bit OSs.

Safari crashed a few times but it isn't a problem.

All I was answering was from your post, which indicates those are problems.
also on this forum there are several other posts in reference to stream being a problem... you might search for them. because the programs worked properly on other x64 OS's is not sign they will work correctly on this OS, but then you copy of OS is still in ??Beta??
also: every thing in code is taken from your vee-pcinfo.nfo This is not something I made up. Just trying to help.
Code:
<Type>Application Hang</Type>
<Details>The program acrodist.exe version 9.0.0.332 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel
Code:

P4: 6.1.7100.0
P5: Windows Defender
Code:
07/05/2009 11:38

<Details>Fault bucket , type 0
Event Name: APPCRASH
Response: Not available
Cab Id: 0

Problem signature:
P1: Safari.exe
P2

all I'm saying is remove all the extra programs... then see if your problem continues. This is why i SUGGEST a REALLY CLEAN install.

Actually, this is kinda embarassing.

I found out that the 15-minutes "power save" option made my computer freeze. Now I disabled it and I didn't encounter any new freeze yet. Thanks to everyone who helped me :D
