problem with paging file

I saw that paging file size was 1MB less than amount of ram so I tried to set it manually because I havent been getting dump files. After restart it sayed the size was 0 so I tried to set it back to system managed but now it keeps going back to no paging file setting and I cant even get internet brownser to open. Im with my mobile phone now. Please help! If you need system specs or something those are in my other thread. OS is win 7 professional 64bit.

Also, can you type "Change the size of Virtual Memory" into the windows startmenu searchbar and follow the instructions to make sure it is set right?

I am not sure why it wouldn't keep your settings. I will look for any other options. there might be one to disable page file.....

It's going crazy somehow. I again just checked the settings and suddenly 8191MB was allocated though no paging file is still checked. That made my internet work again. F-Secure has crashed though (edit: it managed to restart itself now) and I wouldnt want to reboot again just yet because it's quite hard to ask for advice with mobile phone internet in case it stops working again.. Oh, and now that I checked again the checkmark is finaly in system managed size as I set it in the first place..

Should I let it be so or use the custom size, and if latter, what should I set for initial and maximum size?

I dont know if this is related, but just before this I unpluged the other 3 HD:s to help solve the BSOD issue. After that, everytime I boot it says for half a second that no hard drive has been found. However it gets to the windows without problems. Also the DVD-drive went missing (though now it seems to be back again, havent tested it yet though). Edit2: and no, right clicking the dvd drive just crashed windows explorer so now I'll be trying to restart windows.

Well the page file is generally same size as ram, but can fluctuate up and down depending on need. When the system controls this, it is best.

It sounds like you are doing a few things to much to fast. I would test one thing at a time otherwise you wont know what it causing what.

You say you have multiple HDD's are these set up in RAID?

So i rebooted. It got well to the desktop but then kind of froze again. It took 2min to even establish an internet connection and a while after that f-secure crashed again. I checked the paging file allocation and it was 0. After 13min of waiting f-secure got back again, also asking 3 times for permission for windows media player networking services to act as a host (or something, it was in finnish language). After that the virtual memory was again allocated and the system is working. So I wonder whats wrong with it now. How does it take over 15 minutes to fully restart?

(Edit: just before trying those paging file things I installed CPU-Z to check some specs, but I guess it shouldnt be able to cause the problem.)

About your questions:
Well I have tested about everything I can think of so I thought I would try getting rid of all the unessential devices and find out if blue screens stoped, and in that case start reattaching those one at a time to see which one causes the problem. I propably shouldnt have started messing up with paging file though, I admit..

HDD's were not in RAID. The 3 extra ones were just for streaming samples when making music (and for occasional back up).

In the other thread I did post the files those instructions are refering to, just after the initial post. Just didnt get any responses. I wonder if I wrote too much so no one wanted to start reading.

I think I'm going to just completely format the HD next monday and make a fresh install of windows. Hopefully all the problems disappear then.

If you are going route of reinstall there are a few things you can try first:

I would try a system restore to before you changed the page file size: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html

and if it still doesnt act right, do a repair install: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Ok, I'll see what I end up doing when I get back home next monday. Your suggestions are surely less work and propably would be enough for this case, but as I hope that the complete reinstall might solve the BSOD's too, I might do that anyway. Surely it can't do any harm at least, other than waste of time.
