Possibly since installing SP1 several days ago having constant problems with extreme inaccuracy in text selection, highlighting and cursor placement, also dragging and dropping.

Any ideas?

First, check your system for Malware. Download and run this;

Malwarebytes

Some malware alters settings to annoy the user, and troubleshooting the settings is impossible if malware has affected them.

Thanks! Downloaded it and ran a Quick Scan but it didn't come up with any problems. Now doing a full scan, even though the program implies it's rarely helpful. Any other ideas?

Please wait until the scan is finished.

The scan did find one malware item but after deleting it and rebooting the problem persists.

Deleting the malware does not automatically restore the settings it changed.

What was the malware? I know what some malware does, and if it is one I know, I can give you an immediate fix.

So, please describe your problem as exactly as possible, (one problem at a time please, the fix for one might well fix all the others), and if you can, a screenshot.

From the Malwarebytes log:

Files Infected:
c:\Users\Bob\documents\installer programs\black ice\blackice crack.exe (Trojan.Agent.CK) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully

Also, Avira found:

The file 'C:\Users\Bob\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache\f_000170'
contained a virus or unwanted program 'HTML/Agent.jha' [virus]
Action(s) taken:
The file was moved to the quarantine directory under the name '497b8377.qua'.

As to the specific problems I am having, aside from the difficulty highlighting/selecting text, at times I cannot drag scroll bars up or down, or there is a lag in doing so, nor drag vertical dividers properly to the right or left, such as the one in Mozilla Thunderbird between the message list and the preview pane. Or at times moving my cursor to the left will drag the divider to the left but it won't go back to the right. Also, when clicking on drop down menus, the drop down menu disappears rather than staying visible when I release the click. A screen shot will not help to illustrate these examples--too bad they are not available as screen videos. Or are they? Of course I could take a video with my camera but how would I post it?

No problem, don't bother with a video. I will have to have a think about that, and try a few things, before I can try giving you a fix.

In the meantime, somebody else may well chime in with a solution.

By the way, it is extremely unlikely that this is related to Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Most likely the malware was responsible.

OK, First thing to check. Go into the control panel and check your mouse settings. If you are not sure what to choose, choose the default settings. You can change these again later if you wish, once everything is working.

OK. Go to Control Panel "Ease of access centre" ;

Check first on; "Make the mouse easier to use";

If you use your mouse "normally", make sure nothing there is checked.

The next thing to check is your Windows theme. Right click on the desktop and select "Personalisation"

Save your current theme under a file name like "BobTheme1", or similar, and then click on a windows theme. Choose a basic theme like "Windows 7 Basic"

Check your mouse settings again, they should be something similar to this;

You can uncheck "Enhance Pointer Precision" if it is checked, and see what effect that has...........

Well, sorry, but that's all I can think of to try. If the malware has changed something else, I don't know of anything you can do to find it or put it right. In such cases I re-install Windows after wiping the machine.

I was having exactly the same problem. The solution for me was using a different surface for my optical mouse.

I don't know why this helped now. I had been using the top of my desk just fine until a certain point. I tried of lot of things, but changing the surface on which I move my mouse seems to have completely and immediately solved the problem.

I'm late to this discussion, but with any optical mouse, it's always worth checking to see if there's a hair in the optical port on the bottom of the mouse.

I share my house with four dogs and a wife with very fine hair. So mouse problems are common!
