I have a recurring problem with video playback. This effects sites like youtube and all other souces of online video.

When the system is first booted up video playback and sound is fine and then at some random momen,t which can be after several hours video playback is at about half speed (though it is still smooth and not jerky)and there is no sound. (Indeed the problem seems to prevent any sound file being played) A system reboot rectifys the problem until the next time. I have been searching for a solution for weeks now but just cannot find one.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

I would check what processes might be spiking your CPU usage during the time when this starts happening. It could be something just going haywire.

Just open the site, click where it says Begin Test and wait for it to finish completely. You will then see a result like this:

That shows the answer to the problem IMHO. Your download speed is a bit slow. When you go to You Tube there is a little box to the bottom left of the screen that gives you a choice of pixel size of the video. Try choosing the lowest size usually 380px. Then hit the pause button straight away and let the video download completely before hitting the play button. The problem you have is your system is trying to play th video at a faster speed that it can download hence the glitches you get. I'm guessing you are out in the sticks somewhere in the UK and a long way from your exchange hence the low speed. Either that or you are on a low tariff like Sky has (that is free in certain areas)

I'm sorry but that is not the issue - other computers in the house using vista and on the same internet connection have no problems playing youtube. Anyway the problem is not only with youtube it is with all embedded vidoes when it starts - large or small - plus it doesn't explain why sound players like windows media player and itunes stop producing sound until the computer is restarted.

Though thanks for trying

According to your spec's you have a core i7 and ATI 4550, correct? That should have no problems with streaming video, obviously. Furthermore, if other computers in the house can utilize the same connection and stream videos without problem, then your connection is not the culprit (at least not in this case).

What version of Flash and ATI drivers are you using in which version browser, and do you have any third party codec packs installed?

Yes, those specs are correct.
Adobe flash player 10.0.32.18
Java 6 update 22
ATI 3.0.769.0

But I don't know how to check for codec packs.
