For the past month or so, I am having problems connecting to the Internet. I called Time-Warner and the lady I spoke to looked at a few things and then scheduled a visit from a tech. He almost immediately knew it wasn't from their end, but he checked things out and proved what he thought was true. There are times when the computer does exactly what would be expected, but other times, it just sits there spinning its wheels and going nowhere. It's a 64 bit system using Mozzila Firefox and having Yahoo as a home page. Using other browsers and going to other sites does not help. I have an old XP machine and two iPads and they do not have a problem. In addition, I can be doing something when I do get a connection and then it will go off in never never land so that I'm stuck waiting. If I try to go to Task Manager to see what's going on, it takes forever for that to respond also. It's like there is something running in the background and pulling the system down, but when Task Manager does come up, there isn't anything unusual showing up. Using the troubleshooting tools Windows 7 offers doesn't help. FWIW, I have McAfee and use Spyware Blaster, SpyBot Search and Destroy and Malware Bytes. I would really hate to take my machine somewhere and have them clean the hard drive and start from scratch, but don't know what to do to attack this problem.
The one thing the cable guy saw was that my ip address is hex instead of digital. Would this be something McAfee did or a possible problem?

FWIW, it started acting better yesterday. I downloaded the latest Windows updates that came through yesterday, but it was acting better before I did that. The night before, in one of my attempts to use the troubleshooting tools attached to Windows 7, it showed me a list of programs that were running at start-up and asked me which ones I didn't want starting with each session. I clicked off a few that I thought I would only want running as needed. It came back and said I had not fixed the problem. Was it expecting me to click off all of them? McAfee was in that list and that needs to run all of the time, right?
One of the things I had to correct again is the "Get Windows 10" icon down in the tray. A friend had previously told me how to get rid of it, but with the latest updates, it was back again.
FWIW, clicking the Windows button and X did not bring me to the command line. I had to use the Start icon and type in Command.

Well, my 24 hours of computing bliss are over. It's back to the SOS where I can't get a connection! Mozzila's outline comes up and the little thing on the top left of the screen sits there saying "connecting" but it doesn't. I even tried clicking on my bookmark for this site to bypass Yahoo and to no avail. I am posting this using my iPad - no problems.
I know this sounds crazy or coincidental, but there are many times when I cannot get a connection, so, I check my iPad to see if it can connect and, after that, I can connect as usual to the Internet on my desktop. Right now, that is what happened! I now get a connection.

Need the ipconfig /all information when the problem is occurring. What you already posted looks good.

........FWIW, I have McAfee and use Spyware Blaster, SpyBot Search and Destroy and Malware Blaster.......
Just until we find the cause of this connectivity issue, please consider:

1) Uninstalling McAfee. Install Microsoft Security Essentials in its place.

2) Turn off the protection offered by Spyware Blaster. You can leave it installed, just turn off the 3 areas* of protection that it offers for Internet Explorer. You can leave the protection turned of for any other browsers that you may have.

* restricted website, active x stuff and something that I cannot remember :-(

3) Totally uninstall SpyBot Search and Destroy.

4) Totally uninstall Malware Blaster. For my benefit, can you provide a link to where I could download/test Malware Blaster?

Open a command prompt window and ping 192.168.0.1 using this line:
ping 192.168.0.1 -t
Minimize that command prompt window - just let it run.

Open a second command prompt window and ping yahoo.com using this line:
ping yahoo.com -t
Minimize that command prompt window - just let it run.

Use Internet Explorer to surf the Internet during this test period. If/When you get disconnected, bring up those minimized ping windows and grab a screenshot of each one while you are having trouble connecting to a website.

I did the originally posted results this morning. I also did another one at 3PM and the pings were at 76ms. This thing comes and goes for no particular reason.

We're not talking about me having problems connecting to a site, I'm having problems getting connected to the Internet AT ALL! I have tried using Internet Explorer instead of Firefox and it doesn't behave any different - when I'm having the problem. I guess I don't understand why it isn't consistent (either bad or good).
Sorry, I typed in the wrong program name:

https://www.malwarebytes.org/

I turned off the stuff suggested on Spyware Blaster. I'll leave it at that now as it's getting late and do more tomorrow when I get in trouble again. Thanks.

Yes, I understand that you lose all connectivity to the Internet. I was suggesting that you use Internet Explorer while testing precisely because it is not your main browser. It probably has few - if any - add-ons. But you can stick with Firefox it it is easier for you. Hopefully, there is nothing within Firefox that is causing these outages.

Ztruker's idea to gather the ipconfig info while there is a problem is an interesting one. I look forward to seeing that info.

Follow Ztruker's lead. Anything that I request is just secondary.

You can keep Malwarebytes installed :-)

When I run the suggested script from Ztruker, is there anything more than the pings that we're looking for? How long do the pings have to be to be considered "bad"?
The cable guy suggested going to Chrome just because it has less advertising, etc. that can affect performance. When it accidentally got on my wife's laptop, it was like it wanted complete control of anything and everything. I was always told hackers went for Microsoft products, so, I thought Mozzila was a good alternative.

It will be interesting to see the IPCONFIG and the ping info - so post the everything that you can gather during your next outage.

The default timeout for the Ping utility is 4 seconds. However, a ping is a low priority bit of network traffic. If things get really busy, some network equipment just forgo responding to pings. I usually see less than 1 millisecond "ping times" to my router and around 4 to 8 milliseconds to equipment that is close* to me on the Internet.

*according to tracert

Sure people try to get find exploits for IE. That will let them into business related computers. But I like the security layers that IE uses. Maybe that is because I understand a little bit about it. I don't understand as much about how Chrome/Firefox defend against exploits. Add to that, IE will do things that no other browser will do** - but I'm probably the only forum member that uses those specific things :-)

**
1) operating system shortcuts on the favorites bar
2) full operating system context menus on those shortcuts on the favorites bar
3) favorites that are files - not buried inside of databases

Some people avoid Chrome because of privacy concerns (e.g. Google gathering info on you). While others claim that Chrome is more secure than other browsers because of how well Google pays the people that find flaws: Google Offers 'Infinity Million Dollar' Reward For Finding Program Flaws

If you use Firefox, then it is probably the 32bit version. Mozilla should release a 64bit version soon. There can be a bit more security in 64bit browsers that run on computers with more than 4GB of RAM. It takes malware slightly longer to locate various blocks of RAM that are being used to run a 64bit browser. Hopefully, that extra time lets antivirus apps stop the malware.

I see that your computer has 2GB of RAM and a 64bit operating system. You would have been better off with 32bit operating system with that tiny amount of RAM. Pretty much every little part of a 64bit OS uses a bit more RAM than a 32 bit OS does. It all adds up to give you less RAM for programs.

If you have not ditched McAfee yet, do so now. MSE (linked to earlier) will work better for you with so little RAM.

I use IE11 64bit for specific websites, Pale Moon 64bit (based on Firefox) for forums and 32bit Chrome/Flash for streaming media. All three are open at the moment. I don't use Flash in IE or Pale Moon. There are too many flaws in Adobe's Flash, Adobe's PDF reader and Oracle's Java to have them installed for general browsing. At least with Chrome, its built in Pepper Flash is automatically/silently updated. I'm still looking into 64bit Chrome.

I just had a situation where I was waiting forever for something to load in Facebook and, just for the heck of it, I checked the pings for Yahoo and 192.168.0.1 -t and it seemed that neither were pinging.

The computer seems to lose its connection to the router.

The batch file attached to this post should generate the info requested by Ztruker. Please save it to your desktop and run it the next time that you have an outage. It seems to gather the info without needing admin rights... so, simply double clicking on it should work for you.

It's interesting. I put up the two commands for pinging Yahoo and the other address and, even though I have a good connection right now, those commands did a few pings and stopped running. They're just sitting there and not updating. The Yahoo one shows 76ms and the other one 64. This is what the script shows:

A command of...

ping yahoo.com

...should automatically stop after 4 pings.

A command of...

ping yahoo.com -t

...should continue until you stop it.

You can leave one command prompt window constantly pinging yahoo.com and a second command prompt window constantly pinging your router at 192.168.0.1. Just move them off to the side or minimize them.

I just had an instance where I was playing a game on Facebook and it stopped responding. I kept telling it to retry the connection as prompted, but it always timed out. I ran the short ping on my router and it had stopped a couple of times. The ping to Yahoo and the script you asked me to run would not run. The whole thing lasted a few minutes and then it started to run again. So, trying to get info doesn't work because the script wouldn't run when it happens.
The computer runs great when I'm not having the connection problem despite the suggestion that I'm at the minimum for a 64 bit system. There are any number of places to buy RAM. There are different chips and different prices. I have two slots and can go up to 8 gig. How do I know what to buy and from where? I have money in my Paypal account I'd like to use rather than charge it.

I just had my typical problem. I tried to get on the Internet and it just sat there spinning its wheels. For a time, I was able to run ping Yahoo, but not ping my router. I tried running the script and it didn't run until I got a connection:

At the time I wanted a connection, I tried Internet Explorer and Firefox. I had them going to Yahoo as well as Google without a connection. Finally, Firefox connected to Yahoo.

Sorry if mentioned before, I haven't read from start:
- Do you have another cable to test?
- If cable is alright, try another port on the router.
- Did you try factory resetting the router? Check its manual how to.
- Download and make bootable Linux Mint MATE, and boot into it (no need to install), see if you will still lose connection.

This is a Time-Warner supplied modum/ router. It was installed by the cable guy(Dec.30th) and I got nothing with it. I swapped cables and ports before the cable guy (not the installer) came out last week. I have an XP machine sitting right near the Windows 7 machine and it does not have the problem - coming out of the same router. This no-connect is random. It doesn't always happen after a boot-up. I can be in the middle of doing something while I have a connection and then seem to lose it. FWIW, it is an Arris modum/router (DG860).

P.S.
When I logged out of here and hit the HOME button, it sat there spinning again. I tried running the script again and it went down through to the "Teredo Tunnel Pseudo-Interface" part of the output and then sat there. It did not include the ping information until it finally connected. I tried Firefox and Internet Explorer. I tried yahoo and Google and it would not connect until it was ready to.
