Problems physically moving old hard drive to new laptop. Need Help

Hello to all!

It has been a long time since I needed the forum help, but right now I really need it.

This is the situation:

I had an old Compaq laptop with an intel chipset, in it I had an 500 gb HDD that was running Windows 7 ultimate and all of my favorite programs. That computer is not longer available and I need to move the HDD to another very similar Compaq laptop but with an AMD chipset.

First I tried just plugin in the the HDD in the "new" laptop, but I got a BSOD.

Kept looking for solutions and found here that I should try to start it in Safe Mode and remove drivers and specially modify the registry to change a setting on the intel chipset and to rename intelppm.sys to intelpp.old on the windows/system32/drivers directory. So I tried to do it, but it BSOD again.

What I did next was to use an external sata to usb adapter and connected the HDD to the "new" laptop and modified the registry and renamed the file from there. Connected the HDD and still BSOD.

Right now I don't know what more to try, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also, know that a fresh install would be the best possible solution, but I would love to keep my installed programs, settings and customizations.

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

There are a couple of apps out there that will allow you to "migrate" an existing Win7 installation from one set of hardware to an entirely different set. You hook up the old drive and boot from a CD (containing the app), provide it the drivers for the new PC, and it installs the new drivers to replace the old ones. When done, you reboot and you're ready to go.

I've used the Macrium Reflect Redeploy app -- which costs money. But, I believe you can also do much the same with an Acronis app and an EASUS ToDo Backup Workstation. I've not used either, so someone else would have to comment on them.

But even if you get it to work, you will run into an OS activation problem - Unless that old Windows is a retail license.

Mark I have used Macrium to clone a hard drive (as a matter of fact, the Hard Drive in question was cloned using Macrium Reflect), but had never heard about Redeploy, I will look into it.

Whs, yes it is retail license, so that shouldn't be a problem.

The redeploy is a relatively recent function of Macrium Pro. Reports are that it works well, but I have never used it myself. I am cheap - I have only free Macrium, LOL.
