Solved Product Key Sticker Question

I need some more experienced advice about product key stickers. I have purchased a used dell Inspiron n5010. It originally came with 7 Pro. I contacted Microsoft to check the product key on the sticker and they say it is no good. I was told some time ago that the possessor of the sticker is the owner of the sticker. Is this true? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Everything I find on the net is your Inspiron n5010 came with Windows 7 Home Premium from the factory.

Microsoft doesn't really care who bought the computer operating system. Microsoft just cares if was bought and installed properly showing it was a legal install.

Do you have a Windows 7 Sticker on the bottom or in the battery compartment that states what Windows 7 is installed? I should look something like this.



Could you complete this tutorial by Brink and post the log here.

Yes. I do have a sticker on the bottom. Its for 7 Pro. When I bought this (used) it had 7 Ultimate installed. Microsoft said both keys were invalid. I asked why and they said Ultimate was blocked by Dell and Pro is showing active. Maybe whoever owned this used the Ultimate and Pro keys to install on other computers. I was once told that whoever physically has the sticker owns the key. Maybe that's not true. I guess that worst case I could order recovery CDs from dell and use then to restore back to out of box state. When i got this laptop it was wacked. I decided to reinstall what was on it (Ultimate). I used Belarc to get the product key for Ultimate. The only thing on the laptop now is Ultimate (Clean install).

Well this won't take long.

You have a stolen Lenovo product key installed on your system. It will never activate because it has been blocked for years.
You need to buy a legal copy of Windows 7 and activate it with the proper COA key.
You could also try using the sticker on the computer of Windows 7 Pro. You will have to use a proper ISO of Windows 7 Pro
and then use the COA key number on the sticker if the sticker is not also counterfeit to activate.
I have no idea where you can find a legal proper ISO file for Windows 7.

WOW!! How can you tell by the report? I am a student in computers and networking at a technical college here. It would be good to know how to tell. Looks like the recovery CDs from dell is my best bet. Dell told me I won't need a product key for the CDs because the key is in the mother board. Do you think that is correct? Remember, I wiped everything when I installed the OS.

Since Microsoft is saying the Win 7 pro sticker you have is invalid, downloading an ISO will not help since you don't have a valid key to activate it. You can still get safe, legal copies of Win Pro from Newegg.com.

Remember that Microsoft considers your OEM/SLP key that came with the computer as blocked. Because it is in combination with the Dell key that auto activates Windows 7.

If you find a ISO of Windows 7 Pro you will be able to use the COA key on the Microsoft sticker if the sticker is not counterfeit.

I have no knowledge of what one can do with a Dell DVD. I have never used one.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I am going to try the 7 Pro install with the sticker product key just in case it works. If not I will order Dell recovery CDs. Its worth a try.

I still would like to know how to read the output of MGADiag Tool. It would be helpful for me in the future since I am studying for networks and computers. I read the article how SLP and SLIC works. Not quite sure I understand all of it but I did understand the info is stored in the BIOS. So recovery CDs would work. Any input on how to read the MGADiag Tool to determine the status of the OS product key would be great. Or if you know where I may find the information would help as well. I have googled for it but could not find any information on how to interpret the output.


UPDATE: Well its a no go on the 7 Pro. I will have to change ownership of the laptop to me via the Dell site. It takes about 7-10 days to process. They will not send the CDs until ownership has been changed. Then I can oreder the CDs for 39.99US. Better than buying retail.

Any info on how to tell if Product key is valid or not by using MGADiag would be great.

Windows Genuine and Activation Issue

I know of no books one can learn from.
Dell is concerned about who owns the computer but Microsoft doesn't care who owns the computer. Microsoft concern is if the operating system being used meats the terms of the user agreement.

Putting together some standard posts, just for info....

Activation Computers that come pre-installed with Windows from large manufacturers usually come with two Product Keys

OEM SLP: This is the key that came in Windows (from the factory). It works by connecting to a BIOS flag (the SLIC table) found only on computers from that Manufacturer. It also checks for the existence of proper matching licenses in the OS itself. Once it sees both, it self-activates every time the machine is rebooted.

COA SLP: This is the key seen on the sticker located on the side, bottom or in the battery compartment of your machine. This key is for use if the OEM SLP self-activation stops working for whatever reason.

The COA sticker defines the licence available for re-install, but the trick is to ensure that you read the sticker properly...

0xC004F050 usually means that you've misread a character - either C/G/6 or B/8 or Y/V are the most common, an O/0 is almost always a Q

Note that the following characters cannot be used - A E I L N O S U Z 1 0 - so don't bother trying unless you like the noise it makes

The Dell Recovery media - assuming the BIOS SLIC table is OK, which it seems to be, from the above results - will allow a clean reinstall of the original OS without the need to input any Key, as it contains the proper certificate/license to match the SLIC table.

It's all too common for 'second owner' machines from eBay to arrive with bogus installs - I have always been dubious of ANY machine sold with Ultimate supposedly installed that doesn't come direct from the manufacturer, as it's an obvious way to increase the sale value of the machine without expense (some don't even go to the trouble of installing the hack, they just leave the system Unactivated )
Pawnshops are another common source of such installs - and they really should know better.

Thanks NoelDP. Very informative. I have read a few sites about SLP and SLIC. I have not found anything on how to interpret the MGADiag output. In post #3 I submitted the output. I do know that the BIOS information for the ACPI_SLIC table should be in the output after copying and pasting it to notepad. Does the output show that it is in the BIOS? I'm trying to confirm that when I receive the Dell CDs, it will load and activate properly. If not I will just go and purchase a retail version of something and load it, if thats an option. Learned a valuable lesson buying this from a Pawn shop.
