Program runs on Startup?

I have a program installed that runs a monitor application on start-up. I have had a look at my start-up options using Chameleon Startup Manager 3 but I cannot find this application in the list at all. Any ideas on how this is being launched at start-up?

Hi DirtRider,

It's no doubt being run from the registry or hidden by Windows from 3rd party apps.

You could try running 'msconfig' from the start menu and see if it's present there.

If msconfig doesn't show it I would check it with autoruns (Part of the Sysinternals Suite) that shows you basically everything that starts.
No matter where it comes from.

Check in the program configuration window, running the monitoring app at startup could be enabled in the preferences there itself.

I agree with this one.

There are applications that are too persistent on being automatically launched on startup and disabling them using the msconfig>>Startup option or third party startup managers would not help unless you disable the program at startup on its very own settings.

Yahoo! Messenger for one is one of those naughty apps. I tried disabling it on msconfig>>Tabs and I even used CCleaner's startup manager but after I restart and then re-check the enabled startup applications, Yahoo! Messenger always gets listed among those enabled. That is until I found a checkbox on its settings that says something like "start Yahoo Messenger when the computer starts". I unchecked that box then OK and Yahoo! Messenager doesn't bother my startup anymore.

I personally prefer only my antivirus and desktop sidebar to launch at startup cause I want the minimal startup delay as possible.

I have seen a lot of poorly tweaked computers with maybe a dozen or more enabled startup applications. Its not pretty.

Yes, the fewer programs that start the quicker the computer will start. I trimmed my Win 7 Desktop down to a 21 second start by trimming unneeded programs some of which were being launched daily from Services and several other Microsoft information gathering programs which were pre-scheduled to continue launching for years to come were being launched from Task Scheduler.

AutoRuns is fine but it's kind of cluttered. Sometimes it's easier to find it using WinPatrol.

Use AutoRuns. This program is well documented. Has Help. Is written by an extremely knowledgeable person. Is free. Is the most complete software of this type.

Autoruns is a program which can be downloaded from Microsoft.

As you might have surmised, I'm a great fan of this program. Also a good program for spotting virus plants.

Sorry guys for not replying sooner have been a bit busy over the last week. I found it using the autorun and it sits in the task scheduler

There are a lot of programs that choose Task Scheduler to launch from. I once found a piece of the Ask Toolbar which had sneaked in on a Foxit Reader install launching from there.

Yeah I hate it when you have to search and search for some of these programs and how they start. This one was not that a big deal just that I was intrested to know how they had changed it to do it this way

I once had to track down a java appelet that was consuming 97% CPU at startup. Autoruns found it in one of the 50+ places that it could have been starting from and fixed it so it never happened again. I am confident that I never would have found that little bugger's launch location without Autoruns.

Autoruns is simply indispensable especially when your out working on someone else's computer.

Thats why I have the full Sysinternal Suite on my "Emergency stick". That's 66 gems which only take up 12.46MB
(27.8MB unpacked) which in my experience, come in very handy in a lot of situations.

Mark Russinovich is a true genius who understands the inner workings of Windows computers like few others do. His Sysinternals Suite has an amazing array of very useful programs I just wish that they were all Win 7 compatible.
