Program to use instead of Microsoft WORD ?

My laptop came with a trial Microsoft Office ...... now I need something to open PPS, etc.
Any FREE program, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend Open Office, too. In my Opinion it is most similar to Microsoft Office.

Also avaliable as portable version, which can be very usefull:

I would recommend Libre Office, Open Office versions are not being continued anymore, and I believe it also requires Java :huh:

Robin hi.. thank you so much for replying.. seems like Libre may well be the best choice.thanks for the link you provided as well.. another commented about open office perhaps won't supported.. since this is a new laptop.. I plan to have it a long time.. I want to make the best choice .

Can you tell me if Libre opens all those pps ..etc., programs like open office will ?

I'll take a look at that as well, I might can use it later after I get all settled in with the new laptop..
so far I'm quite confused with all the differences with W8, from XP and W7. ( XP is my favorite 7 was almost the same ) not so with W8.
I must get those disc burned , in case I should need those later.

What I like about Jarte is it's small and you can go to their website and get little addon's as needed to do more things. If you don't need something you just don't download it.

Have you looked into AbiWord? I came across it while trying Linux distros and it looks to be a light, simple word processor on the level of MS Word.

I thought Libre was a spin-off of Open Office and they are basically the same, for the time being. OO is maintained by Oracle and LO by a new "federation".

My understanding is the people that made and maintained Open Office for Oracle got in a squabble with Oracle and went off on their own and started Libre.

I would also say LibreOffice as long as you don't want macro/Visual Basic compatibility. I can still vaguely remember Wordstar on a green screen monitor!

Open Office and Libre Office are the basically the same program and concept, I've used both, and currently using Libre Office.
