I would also say LibreOffice as long as you don't want macro/Visual Basic compatibility. I can still vaguely remember Wordstar on a green screen monitor!

LOL... Yeah, that was the days when you turned on your PC and stared at a blank screen with a blinking cursor. And folks complain about the price of software now. Back then it was nothing to spend $3k for a machine and another $3k on software to be able to do any work. Lotus 123 and PageMaker would take a big chunk of that budget. MS Office is a bargain these days so there's no shoulder to cry on here.

I started using Open Office(OO) and switched to Libre Office(LO) and my concern was that OO wasn't being updated after several years, but LO was:

Development on OpenOffice is glacial right now; since being transferred to Apache the project hasn't released any new versions. Like the article said, most of the 3rd party and some of the 1st party devs jumped ship. That's not to say that nothing is going on for OOo. IBM is a major contributor; I believe they've donate their Lotus Symphony user interface to the OOo project, which should become part of the OOo release eventually. But as far as speed of development and the kind of ongoing, broad community support that OOo used to have, LO's where it's at.

For the concerns about Java use;

LO is getting updates more quickly and development has been moving it away from its Java dependency (still not there yet if you need the database application to work, or certain wizards for documents). I don't use databases and have the java setting turned off in Tools >Options >Libre Office >Advanced, and have had no errors or warnings using any wizards in writer or Calc.


LPt1 you would need Impress/Presentation, the equivalent to Power Point to open those .pps files, and I haven't seen anything on needing Java for that.

A collectors piece. I have all my old vinyl LPs for both nostalgia and the collector value. I have an old 486 Windows 3.1 clunker boxed up that I paid $4k for!!!! PS: the 14" CRT color monitor a bit wonky though.

My daughter took my first pc.. an HP laptop 15.6" screen, .. I paid cash for it at Wal-Mart.. I layed down the full price in cold hard cash.. $2,200., the clerk looked at me a bit funny..I just smiled and said my first pc.... had everything they could put on a pc.
I think I recall the full price would have been $3,500. had ( Windows Me ) on it, I still have the manuel If I'm not wrong... along with the CD,s box.. etc. Now days we must pay for a set of CD,s , for our new Laptop or desktop.

Question.. please... Anak...when opening and using Libreoffice.. will I have sound on these if they originally contained sound ?
Something is lost if they did..( I don't seem to have any sound ).. maybe I should check to see if my sound is up.
I especially love music when viewing a slide shows etc.

If I understand you correctly.

You have .pps files that you know have sound because you created and saved them with sound, with the trial MS Office or even with any MS Office product.
But, when you use Libre Office Impress/Presentation to open them, they don't have sound.

They may just need converting:
Try saving one of your .pps files as .ppt or even .pptx depending on the version of the MS trial you used.

I would use the Save As command, that way you won't disturb the original file.

Open the file and see if it then plays correctly.
