Hi Y'All - newbie here.

Searched the forums for answers but no luck, hence this thread.
I have Win7 Home Premium 64-bit on my new PC here in Finland. When I did my install, I chose English as the install language (Finnish and Swedish were the other choices). All went well, but now when I download and install certain programs (Audacity, for example) I get to choose the install language, so I select English. But when I run the program, parts of it are in Finnish - ?

I found another thread along these same lines which read, "EDIT: Found it! In the regional settings, under language settings -> administrative -> non-unicode programs the language was still set to Dutch. They sure don't make it easy...
This solved it."

I did the same, but the non-Unicode programs setting was English, so I could use some sage advice from you gurus - thanks in advance for your time on this.

Hi Salmon Dave, nice to get new Finns to the Seven forums!

You should set your location to an English speaking country. If the location is set to Finland, some programs use that information and present certain dialogs and menus in Finnish, although you have installed an English version.

Control Panel, icon view: Region and Language, location tab.
Control Panel, category view: Clock, Language and Region > Change location.

Moikka Kari!

Thanks for the warm welcome, but I'm a Jenkki (doesn't make you a bad person :D).
I'm dealing with my sick son at the moment, but as soon as I get a chance, I'll do as you suggested.
Audacity is a beta version, and it's funny when the menus come up in "Finglish" - I can translate (just finished with Win XP suomeksi).
I'm quite sure your suggestion will solve the problem.
Tuhannet kiitokset, ja mukava päivään jatkoa sulle!

Salmon Dave, even better than to meet a new Finn here is to meet a so incredibly civilized American he's chosen Finland as the country where he wants to live. In my absence, Finland needs all the other cool guys she can get, even when she must import them...

Back to the topic. This at least helped me; Living in Germany, some progs are still trying to show at least part of dialogs in German. Choosing the right location helps. My own experience is that after you have set the location to USA, you might have to uninstall and reinstall Audacity (including all possible traces in C:\Users\Your_Username\AppData\Local (& Roaming), plus in C:\ProgramData.

Have fun, enjoy our forums. Please could you send me some Paulig's Presidentti coffee, HK:n sinistä lenkkiä and Turun Sinappia? And of course a few cases of Karhu III beer?

Moi Kari,

You forgot to ask for any ruisleipä (are you a Vaasan Ruispalat or Reissumies man?) - heh, heh...;)

OK, I've had the chance to follow your expert advice, but to no avail.
The program in question is Audacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode), which might account for the difficulties; can't install any other version in Win7 64-bit, so I guess that's one of the bugs they'll eventually work out.

On a personal note: my wife's from Lappeenranta & was studying to be a Russian translator in '86 when we met in Leningrad - I was there touring as a keyboard tech for Billy Joel, so my ending up here's all his fault!

How'd you end up in Germany - similar story? Let me know.

Reissumies, most definitely!

No, not a similar story; Billy Joel had nothing to do with me moving to Germany ;)

We are both about 50 now. Back then, I was working for a Finnish telecommunications company (make an educated guess...) in several countries, found myself from Rome. Angie, my dear wife, born and raised in former East-Germany, had never been abroad except in Soviet Union and Poland, and then suddenly the Wall was down and she could travel to West, first time, to meet relatives who had escaped late 40's, long before she was born. She suddenly heard she had a big apartment in Rome, left to her by her unmarried uncle in his will, and rents from that apartment since mid-60's. So she packed her coffers, bought a car and drove to the eternal city, place she had always thought never to see. Rang doorbell of that apartment, met a nice also German lady, who told she'd been waiting, she could move away in a week so Angie could have the place for herself.

Rest is history. Canova's café in Piazza Popolo, me with a laptop (portable computer sounds better, those days "laptops" were quite big), an "Ossie Frau" who had keen interest in everything Western stops by and points to the computer, nodding and saying "Super!" (she could only German and Russian then). We sat down together for a Campari, talking more with hands than words, for I was not so fluent in German then as today. She was so childlike intersted in computers, and everything else, could not believe me when I told we could drive to airport and buy tickets and fly to London that very moment if we wanted. No permission needed.

Why am I telling this? Because this story is for me always nice to tell. The nice part is this: same café, a week later, sitting together and enjoying Roman spring as everyday since that first meeting a week earlier. I had decided to not let it go further because I already knew I was going to be transferred back to Finland on any day. But then she asked if I would like to move in to her place, why keep two apartments if we were together every day. I said yes, that's a good idea, and called already later same afternoon to my boss and gave my notice. I stayed, working for each and everyone who had something to offer. Was still married then but papers were already filed, I had three short marriages in 70's and 80's.

Some years later Angie's mother had a really bad stroke back home in Leipzig, and needed help, so without thinking it we moved to Leipzig. I established a consulting company with a Swedish friend of mine then living in Berlin (only 80 minutes with car). Retired this May, got two milder ones and one really bad stroke myself in August and September (three strokes in 8 weeks). Now recovering, still using computer only with trackball and on-screen keyboard (left arm and hand still not working)

Under my avatar, above the flags of my native Finland and our home state Saxony you can read I'm a Finnish immigrant here. An immigrant, not ex-pat. Immigrant stays, does not return home. Ex-pat is a temporary status, somebody who plans to return home. For me, home is more state of mind than a place; home is where Angie is.

Sorry, we old geeks are soooo nostalgic.

Let's go to a few big ones when I'm in Finland next time :)

I'm famous here because of these off topic posts of mine. To please moderators, I'll try to return to the topic: I think you just have to live with that Finglish Audacity. Sorry.

Take care.

Kari

Hi Kari & All,

Found the workaround via Audacity's forums - had to enter their menu preferences and select English language there (it had been set on "system", even though I had selected English as the language during install and my Win 7 is in English).
Beta has its' quirks...
Glad others found your story as interesting as I did, Kari - and off-topic or not, I liked it!
Hope to "go to a few big ones" (and drink them as well...) when you next visit. I work as lighting designer / technician for Vantaan Nuorisopalvelu in their Lasten ja Nuorten Kulttuuri ja Monitiomitalo Vernissa in Tikkurila - we have a nice café overlooking the waterfall on the Kerava River. Good place to hook up - right near the railway station. Let me know...

Train to Tikkurila, down into the railway's tunnel under the tracks, left thru the tunnel towards the Sokos Hotel Vantaa, then turn right down the path along the other side of the rail tracks - the path ends at the Kerava River and takes you right to our front door. Heureka is just on the other side of the river from us; we're in the large brick smokestacked building which used to be Tikkurila Paint's factory. Check Tikkurilantie 36 on Google Earth...
