Solved PSU Question

Here is one for the Community.

I Replaced an Old Psu last night with a New one.

Old Psu has all Needed Connections as does the new one.

Old =
24 pin M/B
8 Pin CPU
Molex *8
Sata *6
2* PCI-E

New
24+4pin M/B
4+4 pin CPU
Molex * 7
Sata * 8
4* PCI-E

So All in all a simple transfer?

The motherboard has 3 Power inputs,
24 Pin
8 Pin
and a 4 Pin Molex Input.

The Problem

Swapping the PSU's over no problem, Disconnect all from Old then put the new one in.

The New one however makes the MB shut off after 2 seconds. After an hour of tinkering i found the problem,

The 8 Pin Input to the MB makes it shut off, if i remove the 8 Pin it runs and doesnt crash (Had it on for an Hour Straight)

The Question

Is it safe to Run the Pc WITHOUT the 8 Pin Connection?
Or do i need to return the PSU to the Supplier?

I will upload pics when i can get them.

Anything helpful would be appreciated.

I dont get your Question, Yes this is all about one Motherboard

I'm looking at the manual for it right now and it doesn't have a 4 pin molex connector on it. It does have a 4 pin (square) power connector along the left side near the keyboard and mouse ports.



For that you split the 2x4 connector and only use one; ideally it shouldn't matter which you use but who knows. If you haven't, try it with each.

P.S. What is the make and model of the new power supply?

Oh no sorry Completly Different i thought you meant the specs listed above ^^

The motherboard in Question is a FOXCONN but i cannot find the serial for it

I assume these connectors are keyed in such a way that if you use all 8, you can only insert the plug in one way, not reversed?

If I understand correctly, by "4+4" you mean a PSU connector that has 8 pins, but you can use either of 2 groups of 4 separately?

If so, have you tried just using just 4 of the 8, into either the top 4 on the mobo 8 pin receptacle, or maybe the bottom 4?

My motherboard has an 8 pin receptacle but I have only a 2x2 connector from the PSU. It turns out that the 2x2 was keyed so that it would fit into the top 4 of the 8 pin, but not into the bottom 4. It worked fine when put into the top 4.

You have a molex connector onto the motherboard? Don't think I have seen that.

Ig In answer to your Questions

1) Yes they are Keyed in a certain way
2)Yes it has 2*4 which can be used seperatly or Together for an 8pin
3)i have tried 3 ways with the 4 pin on their own so... Left, Right and Center the same problem happens.
4)And yes it has a Molex 4 pin just above the PCI slots Lemmie link the photo's in to show you.

The proper model number for the new motherboard would help.

You have a molex connector onto the motherboard? Don't think I have seen that.

Some SLI and Crossfire capable motherboards have them for providing extra power to the PCI-E slots when two cards are used. It isn't needed in a single card setup. I used to have an old A8N-SLI board that has it,

That Makes sense since this PC is using x-fire. Im waiting for the Images to upload now.

Any more thoughts on this? the only difference in power is the old PSU is 800 and the New one is 850.

And i am Not doing a Transatlantic Call as the Supply office is in America or Taiwan



OH and i Know the Computer is a Dust Factory, its why the Old PSU died, So im Cleaning that out as i go...\/\/

I assume the manual is useless, but does the mobo manufacturer have a forum--either run by the manufacturer or by a private party?

Do you know if the molex connector supplies power to the same locations on the board as does the 8 pin? That is, can you use one or the other--or is one of them only for certain purposes?

You have an 850 watt PSU, so I assume you plan to run a high powered graphics card or otherwise use a lot of power?

Don't know what else to tell you, but I certainly wouldn't resort to a transatlantic phone call.

That 4 pin for the PCI-E slots is only really needed if you are running two video cards, other than that it won't affect anything if it isn't connected.

As for the 8 pin, that is needed if you want a stable system. It can also be run using only a 4 pin as shown in the manual,



Try it that way and see if it will boot.

I tried with the 4Pin at least in 3 different arrays. ^^

One of the better manufacturers. Doesn't matter though as it still could be a bad one.

Be a pain but have you another computer you can test it on to see if it is the 8/4 pin that is the problem? If not I would look at returning/exchanging it for another.

Quick question, was this motherboard and the old power supply both working before the swap, or is the swap the result of the old power supply dying? If it is due to the old PSU dying, then there is a very good possibility it took the motherboard with it.

Also in your video clip, when it is running without the 8 pin power connector, is it loading Windows or just running? From the looks of it with that connector on, that there is a problem with the motherboard.

Yeah Sorry i Forgot to ask could you mark this Thread Solved, I found after taking the Motherboard out that the area around the 8 pin was blackened slightly and figured that the motherboard went with the PSU, So i now need a New motherboard.
