Solved Put the battery in and

Woke up a few days ago an booted my Win 7 Home Premium. Opened the browser and could NOT connect to but a few sites.
Trying to figure this problem out, I noticed the time was over 8 hrs slow. Reset the time and went to get a new battery. Put the battery in and thought all would be fine. However watching the clock keeping time for about 20 mins I stopped looking at the clock. After a while I noticed the time was wrong again. While trying to figure this out I came across this page: Windows Time service tools and settings | Microsoft Learn And noticed the following missing key "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time" and the 5 sub keys. The second shot shows where the Key should be. Between hilighted key vwifimp and W3SVC. How the hell can a key just disappear? I ordered an adapter to connect some of my other Win 7 drives to this laptop and try to extract the missing keys. The system time will never update correctly without the missing keys.

was it the CMOS battery you changed.

run sfc /scannow

have a look at this tutorial and select another primary sync source

When the CMos battery is dead, the time and date is set to many years behind.

8 hours seems more like time zone
Is your time zone correct?

Yes it was the CMOS battery. The time will not update while that key is missing.
I have been using a little program called Net Time since yesterday morning. It sits in the tray and updates the time every 15 min.
So far it;s working great.

If the RTC (real time clock - Hardware clock) is working you can just need to correct it once a month.
If you need to correct every 15 min something isn't working as it should.

As stated MS says the time will not update without the missing registry key and the five sub keys.
I canceled the adapter I ordered and when I get time I will put one of the win seven disks into this laptop and export the key.
At 83 years old I'm a little slow. If you reread the OP, the top image is from the linked MS article. The lower image is my registry clearly showing the missing key.

I still haven't gotten time to boot another drive. I'm moving
almost 10TB of data to a new server and it seems to take forever.
This helps a lot.

EDIT:
This crap is getting crazy. Merged the file and the time is not updating.
Tried to sync the time manually and now the Windows Time service is missing.
It was there yesterday. Need to figure out how to get it back.

Edit 2:
Ran this command "w32tm /register" and got the time service back but when trying to
start the service ended with errors about restrictions and indicating I need to restart the system.
I still have a few hours of moving files until I can do that.
As of now though I think the problem is solved.

Well hell guys. This thing is still not updating without NetTime running.
I have an image I'm going to install tomorrow. It's three months old but I can deal with it
I'm backing up the system now.

OK,guys. I booted to another win 7 backup drive and loaded an image from July 2023. Still losing time.
About 6 hours later the MB fried. Video went out. So I guess this is solved.
Have another computer coming identical to what I have. It's missing the hard drive and memory
hoping the MB is good. It boots to BIOS. And thanks for all the help guys.
