Hi

I have an old laptop that died about 2 years ago.
Building a desktop for my son and was wondering if I could use the key from the dead laptop for the desktop?

If that won't work I have a upgrade key I never used for Windows 7 Professional, could I install Win7 and use it to activate my OS?

If it matters the laptop was a Acer 5551 with Windows 7 Home Premium

Thanks,

Hello Grnfinger, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If it's an OEM key for the Windows 7 that came preinstalled on the laptop, then I'm afraid that you would not be able to use it to active Windows 7 on another computer.

OEM keys are permanently tied to the motherboard and restricted to only being able to activate on it. :(

If it was a retail key, you would be able to use and activate it on any computer as long as it's not activated on more than one computer at the same time.
