I know very little about Smart Phones. I have the kind of cell where all you can do on it is talk. A person at my office has a Smart Phone and told me that she could press a buttom and turn the whole room into a Wi-Fi area. I don't see how this could work. Is what she said true? Thanks,

Wi-fi hotspot is a feature of some Android based phones, although it usually involves a monthly charge from the carrier.

I think that my carrier (Verizon) charges about 30 USD for the Wi-fi hotspot service.

my isp provides free wifi hotspots so i can connect pretty much wherever i go , within reason.

It is quite common feature, HotSpot apps cab be found to almost every phone. Screenshot from my Nokia N900, I have a no limit 3G / HSDPA data pack from my provider O2 Germany, giving users of my "mobile HotSpot" quite a nice line speed, in this area about 4 Mpbs, always over 1 Mbps.
