Where the heck do you put the shortcut?

I assumed it had to run before the program for which I created the shortcut run (at startup), so I put the shortcut in Start – All programs – Startup.

However, it did not work. Now, my program was not in "Startup", neither in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup". I used to know where to look next, but I have forgotten, so I do not know where my program start up on computer startup, only that my program *may* start before the shortcut (and then, the whole thing would fail).

So, I would be most obliged if someone could help me out. Where do I place the shortcut for this to work? Thanks!

You can run at startup as a task, Pin to Start Menu, Pin to Taskbar this shortcut, or move to where you like for easy use.

Well, your post helped me find out that my program runs from at startup:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

So, I got the brilliant idea of setting this program not to run at startup (which would delete this key in the Registry), but to put it in either [My name] Startup or All Users Startup, and put the UAC shortcut in the Startup that did *not* have the program startup.

Well, could not check if that works, because my program does not start up in either Startup. What a bummer. Don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that I have 64-bit Win7 and that this program (called "Everything") is installed as a 64-bit program.

I'll continue to try, and will also look at Shawns post that just came in.

Hello Shawn.

I am scratching my head. First, if I uncheck "Start at computer startup" in Everything (my program), and put a shortcut for it in any Startup folder, the program does not start at computer startup. It only starts up if I have "Start at computer startup" checked, and then, the UAC kicks in and asks me if I want to allow Everything to change ... etc.If I say "Yes", everything is fine.

So, what should I do????

My inclination is to go back to

and recreate. If I do, what would you suggest I do after that?

Next, use this tutorial below, to create a separate task to run the shortcut created from above "At startup" and "At Log on". Remember that the shortcut must remain at the location you saved it at for the startup task to continue to work.

Shawn, I followed your tutorials to a T. It did not work.

When I did

15. Navigate to and select the program's EXE file or shortcut to the EXE file, then click on Open. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: Remember that a standard user account cannot run a elevated program at startup or log on. See NOTE at top of tutorial for more information.

I put in the shortcut (not the .exe file name), and it showed, under "Program/Script", as:

C:\Windows\System32\schtasks.exe

Is that correct?

This program, Everything, is a program that creates a database of file names, and then updates this database on the fly when files are added and deleted, or file names are changed. Could this be a problem?


When the UAC windows appears, at computer start-up, asking
"Do you want to ...", the program location is shown as

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Everything\Everything.exe" -startup

Does this interfere with the shortcut?

This program has its start-up info in the registry.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Just to be sure if everything, be sure that you have removed all startup entries for the program in METHOD FOUR of the tutorial below.

Next, take the elevated task shortcut that you created in the tutorial below and place it somewhere like in your My Documents folder (or where you like).

Now, create a startup/log on task with the elevated task shortcut at it's new location using the tutorial below.

Remember, that this will only run elevated at startup without a UAC prompt for a administrator's account. It will give a UAC prompt for a standard user.

Shawn, I did all of the above.

When I came to this:

and I highlighted this:

C:\ZZZ - UAC Shortcuts\Everything_UAC.lnk

the darn scheduler (again) put in this:

C:\Windows\System32\schtasks.exe

So, I eleted it and put in

"C:\ZZZ - UAC Shortcuts\Everything_UAC.lnk"

Again, it did not work.

You know what, Shawn, I just remember that I much earlier tried to put a shortcut for Everything.exe in [Username] Startup and in All Users Startup, and the program did not start at computer startup. It seems that Everything does not start unless it is in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

That would explain why methods with a shortcut do not work.

Are you using the EXE or portable download version?

Did you uncheck this option in the program, so that you are only using the startup task shortcut created by you?

Ok, I figured out what was wrong. I got it working for me now at startup without a UAC prompt.

When you are creating the startup/log on task, you woud need to right click on the elevated task shortcut, click properties, copy that long Target path, then past it in the Program/script box when editing the Action for the startup/log on task instead of just selecting the elevated task shortcut.

See the outline below to help. I numbered it the order of the steps to do.

Okay, Shawn, great. I will do it, but it may have to be tomorrow, because I am splitting a hard drive into two, and then, I have one other program that gives me problems.
