Under Control Panel... System and security there is a link to 'Fix Problems with Windows Update'

I keep fixing, and after the fix, re-run, and the same issue is found.

Is there something to fix the fix?

I already installed (several times) the SP1 Rediness hotfix.

Hotfix for Windows (KB947821)
Installation date: ‎3/‎13/‎2011 10:09 AM
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Important
Fix for KB947821

Even after that, this troublshooting tool still detects (and says it fixes) the issue.

Is there something else to look at?

Hi Ricard. Here is the log. I ran this AFTER getting SP1 installed (details in other thread you replied to.)

I re-ran this because I still have the issue when troubleshoot windows update finds (and fixes) an error, but when I re-run, troubleshoot finds it again.

As mentioned, I also was able to get SP1 installed. SP1 shows up as an installed update. But it does NOT show up in "show recent updates" via windows update. The most recent run of CheckSER (KB 947821) done after SP1 installed does... it shows as the most recent.

Hello again!

Log looks good. No errors. The persist version includes all runs, not just the last one. There have never been any detected errors.

A few things...

You said that you deleted some folders. Which ones? Don't worry! You haven't done any damage! It is just that running this tool: How do I reset Windows Update components?

in aggressive mode will empty your history. Maybe you did something along those lines.

Please press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue, and type winver. Press enter. Is SP1 installed there?

If it is, then fine.

Also, are there any other errors or problems which you are receiving related to Windows Updates?

Thanks!

Richard

It was the folder that updates download into. I didn't delete, just moved the contents to a backup directory, just in case. C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads was an empty dir

It is just that running this tool: How do I reset Windows Update components?

in aggressive mode will empty your history. Maybe you did something along those lines.
I do not remember running that last night. I might have months ago, as Office Pro 2007 had update issues, and I ran some fix it (I posted about it at the time in case the solution helped others.) I know for a fact that I didn't check or click anything re aggressive mode, with Win7, ever.

Please press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue, and type winver. Press enter. Is SP1 installed there?

If it is, then fine.

Other than SP1, the other 11 updates yesterday went fine. Had to uncheck SP1 to get to them all though.

winver shows SP1

But troubleshoot Windows Update still says it finds (and fixes) a problem... then finds the problem again

Hello!

Please copy C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log into a new folder on your Desktop. Please copy C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log into that folder also. Right click on that folder > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder and upload that zip file here.

Then please give me as much detail from the troubleshooter as possible.

Thanks!

Richard

Requested log files, screen shots (bmp) of the Windows Update Troubleshooter and printout (to pdf creator) of the "elevated diagnostics" the troubleshooter produces when click its 'print' icon are in the zip file... assuming I didn't screw up the upload... worst case I'll put it on my site and post (or PM) a link to it.

I ran the troubleshooter, then copied the logs. The most recent run will be the most recent timestamp / at the end of the logs

Thanks

Hello!

With those logs, which I have just looked at, please do run this tool in Aggressive Mode: How do I reset Windows Update components?

I shall go more specific on those logs if necessary, but the above may well help with your errors.

Thanks!

Richard

Hello again!

Sorry about that. I forgot that Microsoft still have not fixed that  It works absolutely fine on Windows 7. It is perfectly safe.

Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in trying things. That job thing kept me busy. The delay did result in a new Win7 update being detected when I booted. So I installed it. Everything went smooth. So as things are, updates seem to behave. I still don't like that SP1 shows up as failed, canceled and never success. It does show up under installed updates

I tried the windows update troubleshooter I referred to earlier just to see what it says now. This time, I get the output below. I'm not told there is a problem anymore, but I'm told that what is there can't be fixed. I think the later is due to my having checked 'automatically fix'.

Since I can always try aggressive mode, I wanted to wait and provide this info first.
